Third times the charm hopefully.
Made it to the coast at least this time
Mighty tall terrain around Quito, I’m cruising at FL410
Somewhere over Peru
And down finally
Got my descent profile wrong and landed with about 700 lbs in the tanks, definitely not ideal.
Time to catch up on some AAR’s…
Leg 1: KICT to MPDA (that was the plan anyway).
Departing Wichita.
Climbing up through the cloud layer…
Somewhere over Texas at FL410, so far, so good.
Over the Gulf of MEXICO, with the coastline of the Yucatan Peninsular up ahead. IIRC I passed just to the east of Merida. At this point, I had to step away from the PC for awhile.
When I returned quite some time later, I found I was passing 30,000ft with both engines out! I had somehow run out of fuel. Not good! I frantically started looking on the GTN750 map for somewhere to land within gliding distance.
There was an area near the coast that had some options, so I headed in that direction. I arrived over the area with some altitude to spare. I flew a 360 turn to burn the excess altitude and up for the landing.
Which was successful!
When I came to a stop, I ran a quick shutdown checklist and called for a tow back to the FBO hut… Not the greatest start to the trip, but at least the airplane can be used again!
Wow, I haven’t tried single engine flight, let alone a dead stick. Nice flying!
Part of the problem was me not taking the time to read the manual. The Challenger and Global have fuel tanks in the rear fuselage, but you really don’t have to worry about manually moving gas to the wings as it happens automagically if everything is working properly. Not so in a Lear 35A!
Interestingly, on the next leg I had another double flameout but I had moved the fuel out of the fuselage tank. It turns out there was a bug that killed fuel pressure at the moment the fuselage tank hit empty. It is evidently resolved in the latest build, so I need to download that version (or put the igniters on when fuel transfer is almost complete).
Anyway, lesson learned…. RTFM! ![]()
Finco 67 (MP17) airstrip to Enrique Malek Intl (MPDA)
So, after a stiff drink to calm the nerves, and a good night’s rest, it was time to push on. Finco 67’s runway is just 3331 ft long and 29 feet wide. I loaded up with enough fuel to comfortably make the 77nm hop to MPDA, but no more.
With the airplane being so light, it leapt off the runway with plenty of pavement to spare.
I cruised at 10000ft.
Before long, I was on final…
Safely parked.
Ah, yeah fortunately I was doing some reading while the autopilot followed the magenta line and found this run down of flying the 35 https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/557412-learjet-operation-explained-from-a-rw-lear-pilots-perspective/
Managing the fuel in cruise is fairly straightforward, especially when you don’t have any fuel in the fuselage tank, or as we call it, the “trunk”. If you do, you’ll have to remember to transfer it forward, otherwise you’ll run out of fuel when the gauge still says that the total quantity is still 1300lbs. Why? Because you can’t use the trunk fuel unless you move it forward. It’s just a storage tank. The earliest you can move it is when the tip tanks have burned down to 600lbs per side.
I am not able to transfer fuel until I have room in the wing tanks, activating the pumps with the wing tanks at 100% does nothing. It seems as though that’s a bug?
Interesting I haven’t run into that one, the latest version on the MSFS store seems to have fixed it.
Your flights are a lot more interesting than mine Paul!
I don’t mind my sim flights being ‘interesting’, but I much prefer my real flights being ‘uneventful’ ! ![]()
I made it down to SAWH last night. I am still a couple of AAR’s behind. I’m taking a break for a bit though, as I just picked up the Starship…
did few flights in the Lear45 ( with semi-passable results ) , but its too modern imo , I dont know … ![]()
did another leg in Middle America …
cruuzzin
no worries folks , we are just going around
… but I am struggling here .
while the Lear35 from FSW is great and had a blast with it ( can be flown by the book ) , in the sim it runs on my end 50FPS FHD on pancake . thats terrible , no immersion of flight imo . gravitating back toward AeroflyFS4 .
Man! I wish I had flown the -35! Or better yet the -24. But I did fly the -31A for a bit. It was like a -35 but lacked the dutch-rolling and other nasty habits. Airplanes can’t be fun unless they are a little bit nasty, imo. As gentle as she was, the -31 was still fun enough.
agree , but is hard to find such addons for flight sims . people usualy dont buy them . they dont understand that the nastiness is feature , not a bug ![]()
here I go again in AFS4
she is still red , so thats a good sign
leaving Poza Rica
Citlaltépetl , otherwise known as Pico de Orizaba , is an active volcano , the highest mountain in Mexico
