Some random thoughts on this only tangentially related to each other:

I have been prepared since Christmas 2015 when it was clear that my P-47 present from ED was going to look very much like a Spitfire.

Cockpit shots, OK. At least it’s not vapourware. How about a shot of an Alexander Kartveli designed wing with a metal skin on it. We’ll talk then.

Those salty comments not withstanding, I am cautiously optimistic it is getting a mention.

Honestly in many conversations in channel with @near_blind and others, some of them heated, I have come around in the last year on stuff like this. The F-18 looks amazing and worth the shelving of anything else for it to happen. As I have indicated in another thread here at the 'Spike, I just don’t think it is right or even good for the hobby to hold DCS responsible for every sim dream. To borrow a line from Star Trek, Jets might be DCS “First best destiny. Anything else may just be a waste of resources.” The specific point that NB made to swing me in a jungle ARMA mission while we waited to be surrounded and killed, was that the WW2 planes have, do, and will exist in several other titles by other developers. It’s ok that DCS focuses on jets. I have thought a lot about that and how the different corners get stood on in this hobby. I will thoroughly enjoy the sights and sounds of being in a Jug cockpit. Nobody does that better than DCS and it’s not a debate. But I can wait. There plenty of other flying to be done.

BUT DON’T GET TOO COMFORTABLE WHEN THE JUG DOES GET HERE -

It dives till you can’t see it anymore
It drops bombs on your whole army
It doesn’t bother with luxuries like paint
Its cockpit’s bigger than your living room
It’s engine starts with the word “Double”
Your bunker’s not thick enough
Your bullet shield isn’t wide enough
Your runway’s not long enough
You’ll wonder if you’re man enough
Yup, putting the heavy back in the fighter

Good to hear something on the P-47. This planes have/do and might exist in other places, but if it wasn’t for them I’d never had owned a single jet in DCS, also, i really like flipping switches :smiley:

For that poll, do we have to tally up the numbers ourselves? or is that done somewhere on a different post?

I give it crap, but I will fly it. Closest I’m getting to my beloved Corsair for the forseeable future.

The P-47 was one of my greatest disappointments in Il-2 46.

Between the neutered .50s that chewed up planes in other WWII titles but seemed to labor against German armor plating, engines, and even glass, and the “don’t pull that stick for more than a 1.5 g turn or she’ll flop on her back!” handling annoyance, it went from one of my top Western front mounts to a “nah, not flying that” bird.

When CFS3’s treatment is better, you know you messed it up.

I’m interested to see how it can be done here, hopefully in a manner that makes it worth flying!

Default DCS 2.5.1
Today in the Open Beta.

Introduced two new features:

The first version of the video memory manager is presented, which will purge the video memory when the video memory budget allocated by Windows is reached. The resources that were not used in the last 10 seconds are first to be purged.

New OFFLINE mode is now implemented. User can turn on OFFLINE mode that allows the game to be used without internet identification and without a time limit. Note: user must turn off OFFLINE mode on the same PC. OFFLINE mode cannot be turned off from another PC even with the same user’s login.

DCS World
Kh-25 and Kh-29 will follow the laser beam target point of the Su-25/25T optical station when player to shift the target point after launch.
Aircraft AI will be changing altitude between waypoints less aggressively.
Removing scenery objects via trigger will not be stay in the invisible mode, they will be removed completely.
MP. Added additional list of checkboxes for advanced IC server options: require pure textures, require pure models and require pure clients.
If an airbase has multiple runways in parallel the ATC will indicate which runway the player should take.
GUI. Input window. Device names in Input table can be customized.
Added China Asset Pack.
AI helo crew will not sink into FARP surface.
StaticObject.destroy() on cargo object will removes the cargo instead of killing it.
MP. Client will not gets wrong briefing from last played single player mission instead of the right briefing from current MP mission.
Fixed crash with Transport.dll
F10 map. labels in high resolution (1440p, 2160p etc) with turned on Scale GUI option will be in correct position on the map.
Fixed crash when briefing is set by trigger.
LAU-61 and LAU-3 rocket launcher will not looks empty when rockets in the tubes.
Multi Display. Fixed some freezes in 140 degrees FOV.
Deferred Shading render locked in the game and can not be turned off. DCS ceased support of old graphic render without Deferred Shading.
The SF key linked to user’s account can’t be activated with another account.

In order to prevent conflicts between the main joystick and a possible second joystick when targeting with the camera, a new option has been added in Options/Special/SA342 named “SECOND JOYSTICK FOR CAMERA”, it has to be unchecked if you don’t use a second joystick for the Camera (Viviane or else) and it has to be checked if you use a second joystick.
Due to latency issues, ability for the copilot to pilot the helicopter in multicrew mode has been removed.
Added missing keyboard or joystick assignments in controls, Warning, Due to new input additions, it could be needed to re-assign some inputs.
Restored behavior at ground, the helicopter will begin to roll or pitch around 45% torque
Corrected controls position for FFB or non-FFB sticks, including diamond, 3d stick in cockpit view, 3d stick in external view

NADIR, Auxiliaries will display continuously i.e “AUX 1-6”. Pressing AUX key again or using the EFF long key press will revert to previous display.

The Gazelle module goes out of beta state, potential still existing issues will be corrected in time.

SA342 TV sight is inoperative.

Known issues will be fixed ASAP.

Big things I’m seeing:

No more HDR, it’s deferred shading only. Hopefully some of the texture issues on modules that struggle with DS have been/will be addressed (mig21)

Harrier has some big updates

Chinese asset pack.

The transport.dll crash has been addressed. I wonder if this is what crashed our server the other night?

Wow. Big update. I should have time today to check it out.

Struggling to remember if it was deferred shading that was causing issues in night missions with the A-10C where the canopy floods were not effective. Seem to recall having to either click deferred shading on in order for it to work (and that impacted the way trees were presented during the day) or vice versa. If the canopy floods don’t work unless you can turn off deferred shading that would seem like a bad thing.

I am however glad to see that potentially there is a fix for the 3 screen 140 FOV freeze as I did experience that a number of times until I lowered my FOV slightly in the lua files.

This big update does remind me though that I really should download another copy of DCS in the non beta form in case this updates creates issues that were not there before and would be bigger impacts to gameplay than what I was already working with.

use skatezilla tool to manage your single installation. It can change it from 2.5 to 2.5.1 and back. So easy!

I wonder if the ka50 cockpit got fixed…

Ok… So, I turn on OFFLINE mode on my PC, and are having fun as I always do, in DCS…for days on end… Then…my liquid cooler reservoir starts leaking, or a power surge kills my PC… I have to get a new PC.

Then what?

It will happen to some poor sod, eventually.
Murphy says so…

And that’s what the poor sods in customer support get underpaid for. They click a click and the keys are unlocked again.

I guess that’s how they’ll solve it. It probably won’t be a widespread issue.
I do hope they post the stories behind the support cases though. Could be fun reading about how everybody lost their computers…
