DCS 2.X Video Thread

That’s why there’s the text messages. I know, not as good as actually understanding what is said but I do manage okay and with a bit of practice I think I could actually learn enough Russian to understand enough to be dangerous.

The text kills SA. I can’t be looking up at the top right corner while simultaneously dealing with sensors or keeping eyes on the bandit. Lose sight lose the fight.

An acquaintance of mine who flies P-8s had the same complaint about their text-based communications system.

I think we’re using AWACS completely differently. If I am close enough to the enemy that I can’t read chat without losing SA then I am way too close for AWACS to be useful to me anyway. At that point the picture is changing so fast that the information is outdated by the time he has finished his BRAA call anyway. For anything else he information is condensed well enough that I can just include it in my usual crosscheck whenever it provides an update and if I have time to ask for a picture update or BRAA call then I have time to quickly check the message, but that’s just me, YMMV of course.

Edit: just to be clear, I agree that actually being able to understand AWACS is better for SA but I do think text is also good enough 99% of the time.

How about a low altitude ingrees/egress? Look up in the corner to read and parse the text. Now you’re dead because you flew into something you couldn’t see as you were tunnel visioned on the subtitle text in the corner.

In VR the text is big enough and in a location where that doesn’t become a problem.

Edit: I don’t have an actual example right now, but take this screenshot here where you can see the SRS text. The Radio message will be printed in the same font size, just a little higher. Keep in mind the vertical FOV in VR is actually more than double of what you see in this screenshot.

Which headset do you use? On my Quest 2 I have to look up and right to catch the subtitles (or server messages) so much that I lose awareness of anything outside of that top 1/4 (maybe less) of the screen. It has caused numerous close calls for me.

Still on a Reverb G2, however Christmas will be update time. I was talking about native DCS radio messages on the top left like you’d get from an AWACS unit or an EWR unit. Server messages are something different, although I don’t have that particular problem you describe. Font size is big enough but when they’re not accompanied by a sound - which they aren’t on Project Overlord, the server I frequent most regularly - I often miss them. On other servers I occasionally visit I often find them so annoying that I turn them off, especially if they’re automated and update too frequently for my taste.
If you find that they’re too high in the FOV to look at them you could key the radio menu which will cause them to be pushed down.

I got my right/left mixed up. The top limit of my FOV is right about where the comms menu F12 entry is, possibly lower. Out the corner of my eye I can see that something exists there, but I can’t read it unless I physically move my head to one of the corners. Unless it’s locked to the center point of my view like the Petrovich menu it’s useless to me.

Ah okay, that sounds like the FOV/picture clarity is more limiting than with the G2. I only have to look slightly up and right or left to read the radio messages or the radio menu/server messages. The Reverb G2 is clear enough that I don’t have to look directly at it but I do have to look up slightly and a little left or right. It’s not enough to be detrimental to my SA though. I can be down low mowing gras and still read the messages without issues.

like that

@Clutch , practice in non-dangerous situations would say . isnt the awacs replies always similar in structure just with changing numbers ? shouldnt take long to learn . imagine you are foreign western mercenery somewhere in Africa and all the awacs / gci guys are soviet advisors

Yeah I haven’t posted in years, thought I would come back and see how it is.

As good as the OH06A mod is, it’s such a crying shame that we don’t have an AH-6. Can’t buy one, can’t find one in any sim, can’t make one  The FM demo bird is fun, but not complete enough to make you want to fly it like the OH-6A.

I found this 3D model for sale. It says AH-6, but the equipment looks more MH-6. Regardless, I’m wondering how hard it would be to wrap this around another mod.

I think the creator of OH-6A has laid the ground work for AH-6 also. To bad he had to freeze the project due to bad conduct of the community.

Maybe someday the project continues in some form or another. If it was open source, I would definitely contribute by coding.

IDK, it seems like the decision is pretty final to me. Not that they don’t mind displaying it in YT videos. Completely their prerogative and no hard feelings. It’s just hard for me to comprehend why another developer hasn’t taken the AH-6 project on. I wonder if it’s a licensing issue, not there with the MH-6 / MD550, the AH-6 being a Boeing project.

Could be, I have no idea how the licensing goes with these gaming creations of older hardware.

ARMA3 has a pretty good AH/MH-6, several of them actually. With the advanced helo flight model introduced with Prairie Fire, they can be a lot of fun.

As far as a full module, there’s probably not enough documentation to get ED to accept it. Then again we’re getting an F-35, so they may be backing off on the fidelity. The simplest option though would be do the MD500/530 Defender which is extremely prolific, documentation is widely available. Picking which avionics version might be a little tricky, but honestly I think there’s a market for everything from the latest glass cockpit with FLIR to steam gauges. If they did it similarly to the F1 or the Gaz, with different airframe versions and weapons/equipment you could cover a ton of content. I’d certainly pick it up on presale if some made it.
