Even Rockets are complicated in this thing! :joy:

Gotta respect the pilots who fly them.

What was that ā€œThis is the wayā€ at ~13min. Didn’t sound like Casmo. It messed with my head a little.

I didn’t take to Mando so that explains it. Thanks!

Alright after watching the latest video, I am abit confused by the first set of rocket engagements. The co-op one made perfect sense, drive the ibeam to the LOS cursor and as long as you’re in constraints the pylons will articulate to put warheads on foreheads.

Why in the first two engagements was Wags lining up the right edge of the HMD indicator on the target versus centering it? Was that just kentucky windage that rockets in that scenario are shooting however many mils to the right?

Edited to add: Took the KA-50 up just to compare engagement ranges, and at 4.5 km’s I had a decided nose up altitude to try and lob rockets in. To dive in I would have had to be way too high to be safe. Those articulating pylons are going to be pretty handy to avoid having to get too close when using rockets.

Casmo for the win on explaining rocket employment:

Rockets are Secretly Easy | DCS AH-64D Rockets explained - YouTube

If I understood Casmo’s video, yes Wag’s was basically using the edge of the HMD diamond to put a bit of kentucky windage as he was flying with a bit of slip.

Always a bit of a race with juicy bits of news, but one I never mind losing

…i just saw it pop up…I swear!!!…btw even after 2 Rocket videos I’m still confused…this beast will really require my time.

LOL! Yeah, same here. I’m going to have to watch several times and then when have the chance, play with it. I’ve got to say, the simple, plain ASP-17VP Optical on the Hind is much more intuitive IMHO. I hit targets with that sight pretty well. Going to be interesting to see how the AH-64Ds sighting system will work with me.

If I’m understanding it correctly:

The target is selected with a sensor (HMS, TADs, etc). Select rockets, and treat the i-beam almost like the bomb fall line on CCRP (steer to center it up). So long as you are flying the Apache in a coordinated manner, line up the i-beam in azimuth with the target. If the i-beam is solid the articulating pylons will do the rest to adjust for range. If it’s dashed you are out of limits (too close, too far, too wide). The tricky part appears to be how you find the right target and get the right range.

I think in practice it will give a lot more latitude to engage targets than a traditional CCIP type sight. For one you can shoot from a lot further out and still have a stable dive.

After watching these Apache vid’s I get the impression that there’s some odd equation in military aviation platform design: the the faster it is the more simple (user-friendly anyway) the systems, and visa-versa. Course, like the rest I’ve yet to play it.

I think I’m going to have to watch that ā€œWag’sā€ video about the Eye-HUD or what-ever they call it now…LOL!

Judging by how I am at flying the other helos in DCS it will be a long time before I get to the actual avionics lol. I’ll just need to practice staying up in the air!
