DCS F-14 Tomcat Launch Impressions MEGATHREAD

I have 8GB vram and 32GB System Ram with a specific SSD just for DCS. I’d recommend (and want to) go to a 1080ti/2080ti with 11G VRAM, it’s just not budgetable right now considering the price.

So, without wanting to sound stupid? Did the pilot stay with the airplane or did the RIO punch them both out?

What you’re probably feeling there is that at carrier pattern speeds (150ish knots or slower) you’re already pulling more AoA than you might think.

Try RControl + Enter to bring up the control window in the lower left part of the screen- is the input moving like you think you’re commanding but the jet isn’t moving how you think it should be? Then you’re probably fighting the flight model.

Honestly I’ve alway thought of my graphics card as a bit basic r295x2 but since I’ve had vr it’s been really impressive to be honest.

Tomcat is noticeably slowing it down though. Hollo pointe on my own last night was varying from completely fine to unplayable. Single player is actually no problem

SOP in our squadron was to set Command Eject for a CAT. The pilot keeps his hands on the controls and tries to fly the airplane; the RIO pulls the handle when he thinks it is time to leave.

In this case, the RIO pulled the handle and left the jet at some point as it was plummeting. I think the separation is something like 1.2 seconds between the two seats going. In this case the pilot said that he felt the water a split second before he was out of the jet. He was below flight deck level when he got a good chute—he saw the “bow tie”, the bow anchor, heading right at him just before the ship turned away. (They had launched from the starboard bow cat.)

The pilot landed in the after right next to the aircraft–pushed off from the canopy rail to start swimming away from the sinking jet.

That night they were training a new sailor on hooking up the jets to the CAT. A qualified Petty Officer was supposed to be double checking everything…evidently not so much.

The PLAT video is an interesting, albeit short, watch.

Navy divers found the jet, upright and sitting on its landing gear about 150 feet down…it’s probably a nice artificial reef about now. :slightly_smiling_face:

Today after just playing around since release I felt brave enough to engage in combat. I managed to splatter some Floggers and Tigers. However my proudest moment was when I realized I never spun in. It came close once and I was killed once by the MiG-28. But I managed to get her out of some bad spins without hitting the deck. I’m in Love.

Do aircraft carriers carry navy dive teams? Just wondering if they are on the boat or an escort.

Sounds like they were both very fortunate.

Nope. No divers assigned to carriers. This all happened just off the coast so they sent a Navy salvage ship to go take a look about a week or so later.

Thanks I’ve often wondered about that

Does that mean no “at sea” hull repairs below the water line are attempted? Like say something gets jammed into the rudder or whatever?

I’d always figured they’d have a few divers for the purpose of checking hull/screw integrity or whatever.

As a point of reference, it’s 68’ from the flight deck to the water for a Nimitz-class carrier. A little bit more for Kitty Hawk/ JFK, for a Forrestal, I’m not sure.

Did you just pat your AI on the helmet?

Actually yes, I did.

I truly hope you meant 8 Gigabyte or you’re seriously the most amazing IT I’ve ever seen.

Let’s all just remember her complete name…

Nope. No divers work at sea. Only in port.

Putting “divers over the side”, as it is referred to, is more than a bit dangerous. A typical warship has all kinds of sea water suction and discharge openings in the hull. For example, all toilet flushing water is plain sea water…just sucked on in. Imagine the amount of seawater used just for that! :astonished:

Then some combatants have active sonar…I cannot imagine what that might do to a diver if activated close by.

In port, when you are putting divers over the side for some reason you first route a “chit”-a standard form that describes the work, required to be signed by all the divisions and or departments that are in any way involved. You also “tag out” any controls- switches, valves, etc. - that need to remain off during the work. On each control you hang a specially prepared and signed, bright Red tag that basically says, “DANGER, don’t even think about touching this switch, valve, lever or whatever.

From 30 minutes beforehand (check me on this @Navynuke99), every 10 minutes during the evolution you announce over the 1MC (ship’ P.A. system) ,”There are divers over the side. Do no turn any shafts or rudders. Do not take suction from or discharge to the sea while there are divers over the side on USS BOAT.”

It is one of those things that have been written in blood over the decades - literally deadly serious. One of the greatest responsibilities I had in the Navy was when I had Command Duty Officer (CDO; a day-Long duty assignment in port) on USS GUAM and we were doing divers over the side that day. If i made one little mistake, it could easily kill a diver. One of my favorite 1MC announcements was, “Secure from divers over the side.” :slightly_smiling_face:

i chunked a laptop over board from an LHD in Guam, true story. Thats the extent of my navy diving experience.

So, fun counter-story to that, when we were in-port in Brisbane (and we found out years later why we still pulled in there when it was common knowledge why the Nimitz had cancelled a visut there at the same time of year previously) in 2006 fighting and barely holding our own in a battle against swarms of jellyfish, the heavies up top decided to put divers over the side to look at what was going on while we played Musical Electrical Generators downstairs. I have no idea what their reasoning was, but they all got pretty badly stung, and so were pulled out of the water after maybe half a day, but they were there specifically to investigate around all the sea suctions on the bottom of the ship while we were (trying to) use them. So there’s that.

(P.S. I thought the 1MC announcement was every 30 minutes)
