What always amused me were the people I knew who wore the really expensive diver watches but they never scuba dived in their life. I guess they just had money to burn.
I don’t wear a watch for fashion reasons either. I wear one because time is important to me. I don’t want to unpocket my phone just to know if I am early or late. Besides, the mere act of looking at my phone sucks a tiny bit of my soul and sells it to Apple. I will always wear I watch and I will never give a flip if anyone notices. That was never the point.
This is why I actually hate my Apple watch.
It sucks at telling time. It’s a wrist mp3 player for jogging, a heart rate monitor, a weather beacon and a constant interruption of my focus.
Anything but a watch, because when I just need the time at a glance, it does not turn on its display 75% of the time.
Dive watches became fashion and a bragging thing in the 60s, no serious diver would use them anyway. They still sell these things with a gas-ventilation system to allow repeatedly going down to 100m or something… lol, sure! I’m sure it has one user on earth.
Back in the '80s and '90s nothing said ‘I’m ''Special Forces AF’ like a dive watch. These days it’s a beard.
Yeah, I’d rather be mistaken for a hipster than a scuba diver too ![]()
Actually, come to think of it, my boy likes to measure how long he can stay underwater in a pool. Nothing serious, just for fun.
Is there a cheap watch that is actually water tight, 3m max, and has a stop watch function? Maybe that famous Casio model? F-91W.
Any better options in the sub 50€ range?
Hehe, you guys are making me feel bad!
I’ve got a crapton of watches and many of them are divers.
For me, I just appreciate the mechanical artistry of it; in the same way no HUD or EFIS will ever match the sheer PFM coolness of an Abba Jabba.
Gaze upon its majesty!
I love diving with them as well…as much as I’ve had the chance to in awhile. Surely, my dive computer can calculate the tightness of my taint in foot pounds whenever I see a shark. But wearing a dive watch while flipping over the side still reminds me that, as they say…
I lived in a time where sex was safe and flying/diving was dangerous. ![]()
And where I don’t use my dive tables anymore, I still liked calculating my distance/time/fuel and seeing how close I could get to the FMS by using my watch and I still prefer sail to power.
I guess that makes me proudly anachronistic.
Now, where’s my Rolex? I got a three minute egg that ain’t going to boil itself! ![]()
I have a Rolex Explorer II and an Omega X33 (among others). I love wearing the Rolex. It is pretty. But stupid expensive. It’s just a decently crafted hunk of quality steel. The BEST watch in my possession is this…
A Timex Ironman. Usually $30-50 on Amazon. Waterproof to at least billionaire submersible depths and wonderfully intuitive.
I raise you this!..
When I was hired at my airline, carrying one was required, as was a watch with a second indication and a flashlight. For 25 years now the only requirement that remains is the flashlight. But I still carry the CR3 and I still use it. Never out of necessity but because I love how it keeps my head in the trigonometry of flight. The gen-whatever to my right can snigger all she wants. For me this is part of the love.
It probably can handle it but it only says water resist so not sure how tight it is.
Definitely not tight by intention. But cheap.
I’ll check if that Timex is available over here. Thanks for the tip!
Love it! I have one of those around here somewhere.
And I’ve met a few pilots who would have done well with a little application of the 3 to 1 descent rule on occasion rather than blindly trusting the FMS. ![]()
Right?! Math still matters.
I had a few Ironmen . Horribly abused them, great watch.
lol , as you pointed out , mostly workable for me with similar digi Casio , mostly ![]()
so stopped wearing wrist-watch just because of this .
looking for some nice smart necklace-watch …
I wear a smart watch as I know this will reduce the likelihood I will kill anyone ![]()
I kid of course.
Watch karma caught up to me for my joke which could be considered in poor taste.
My Garmin updated it’s firmware. Tracked my self during my run yesterday. Ran 2 miles instead of my usual 2 kms.
I knew something was up but elements of my OCD took over and I had to keep going.
As I’m just getting back into running I prefer a shorter run. And now I sit here sore and stiff.
@smokinhole very happy with the Ironman, by the way! My son does not like it, so I get to wear it whenever I feel like. The fit is real nice, it doesn‘t flop around my wrist due to the angled straps. Perfect for physical work or when I just want to be left alone.
That’s great to hear. Timex has had years to boil the watch down to the most useful functions. It’s darn near perfect! I can’t seem to find this New York Times article where top competitive runners tout the watches they actually wear (as opposed to sell). None are fancy products from Apple or Garmin. Many are scratched up Timex’s and Casios that have served for years. These athletes don’t see the need for heart monitoring and sleep surveys. They just want times and splits.
