So, as a guy in a high tech environment I feel dumb when I don’t immediately know the answers- but please bear with me and feel free to judge me for this question…
My ISP gave me this router for my internet connection…
sadly this doesn’t allow me to use my PICO 4 VR headset wirelessly as it can’t provide a 5GHz WLAN band (I tried with the 2,6GHz band and the result is choppy and stomach-churning).
So I found this one…
that despite being technically cheaper has a 5GHz WLAN band option.
Am I right in the thought process? Can I save my connections detail and use it to replace the one provided by my ISP?
It says it has no DSL functionality so you won’t be able to replace your existing FritzBox with it, but you can connect it to your FritzBox via Ethernet and use it to open a 5Ghz Wi-Fi.
Hey @komemiute, I don’t know about the situation in your place. But have you considered instead of replacing the whole thing, daisy chaining another router behind that one that supports the 5GHz via ethernet? Could be done with a machine like this (PICO 4 is mentioned in the supported devices list). It is practically the same suggestion as what Sobek mentioned.
I believe this is what Paulrix actually does as well for his VR.
Yep, just set it to “Access Point” (AP) mode and you can connect it to your existing network like you would connect a PC. It will automatically get an IP assigned from your FritzBox, just like your PC.
You can access it from your PC by going to http://the.ip.the.ap.got, something like http://192.168.1.143
There you can set its SSID and password.
It will show as a new WiFi “entry” in the WiFi menu of your phone, laptop, Pico, with its own name (SSID) and password that you set on the router.
When your devices connect to it, they still have access to the full internal home LAN, just like if they connected via the FritzBox’s access point.
Different wifi access points can exist on the same network.
EDIT : Correction - that would work if only my frickin’ FritzBox had more than one RJ45 socket free! There’s only line in, and one RJ45 that I already use for my PC.
So now I would need to also get a small unmanaged switch to the shopping list.
Which brings me back to see if it’s just cheaper to buy a more modern router.
EDIT TO THE EDIT : now that I read that again (but with my eyes open this time) I finally understood what you all meant.

SOLUTION : So now that I have understood the whole thing, yeah, I will just buy the Router I put in the first post and used it daisy chained to the FritzBox to provide the 5GHz WLAN I need.
OMFG! I’m so happy!
I never had a more seamless, plug’n’play, just-stick-the-thing-in-the-thing, than with that TPLink AP!
I literally took it out of the box, plugged it between my PC and the actual Internet router and voilà, all was set up and ready.
The PICO4 connected in a second to the new 5GHz WLAN and the PICO cable now will only come out of the box to charge the headset after I finished playing.
I’m maybe easily impressed, but this was absolutely immediate.
Had a very brief test with a simple FPS and the freedom of movement is so liberating!
There’s only line in, and one RJ45 that I already use for my PC.
