But yeah, possibly the best depiction of F-16 A in a flight sim. Honestly there weren’t many flight sims that had it in their rosters. You could fly the A in early Falcon games, DogFight and WOI from the top of my head.

Would love to see the proper Alpha Viper in BMS or DCS.

I’ve done so much research in the last few years I can’t recall the source but, in Desert Storm "they said’ (think it was a Viper pilot) the majority of Vipers were A-models; dumb bombs with smart planes (CCIP/CCRP gizmo and that’s it).

A/Cs used a lot of dumb bombs overall but there were only 2 out of ~11 US squadrons (NYANG and SCANG) with the A model.

There was one story of the SCANG doing SEAD over SAM sites with MK-82/84s…which might partly explain why they were upgraded to Block 52s afterwards to do SEAD properly.

I’m not sure if they were majority F-16As, but certainly the F-16C Block 30/32s were primarily dumb bombs as well - it was the Block 40/42 that brought night attack and smart munition to the forefront.

And we gotta remember, in 1991 “smart bombs” were things you saved for high priority targets like bridges and command bunkers - it was the effectiveness of F-111s going tank-plinking with Paveway laser guided bombs that really showed the idea of using smart munitions for everything had merit!

right after the Win10 version :wink:

long gone are the days when I was fan of similar sims.

full-fidelity or nothing it is these days for me … but mostly nothing as I have hard time to find the spare time.

From this source, the majority of Vipers used in Desert Storm were Cs Blocks 25/30/40.

In the book Viper Pilot, Dan Hampton flew F-16CJ variant (Block 50/52?). During Desert Storm they were used mostly for SEAD/DEAD missions with HARMs and CBUs IIRC.

Apparently there is also F-16CM which is also Block 50/52, that have undergone upgrades through the Common Configuration Implementation Program (CCIP). CJ was pre-CCIP from what I understand. There was also CG(/DG) - these are mission-specific variants optimized for night operations against ground targets, equipped with LANTIRN targeting pods

I guess CM incorporated most if not all features CG and CJ introduced since it was the latest one?

That is right - Bahrain also flew B40s btw - only two Block 10 sqs (USANG) as above.

Hampton flew Block 30s in DS - one source may have called that a CJ also. (there were no Block 50/52 in DS). The German based sq he was a composite with F-4Gs in a hunter killer type setup.

MSIP III:
Block 40/42 was CG
Block 50/52 was CJ

They had different capabilities - so for example CJ could carry the HTS pod but not LANTIRN (until after CCIP).

CM (CCIP) was an attempt (from early 2000s) to get all Block 40/42/50/52 to the same config (although it never fully turned out that way)

The US Tech Orders for B40 - 52 do have the CG/CJ/CM references.

My memory may be flaky, but:

F-16C: blocks 25, 30 and 32
F-16CG: block 40/42
F-16CJ: block 50/52
F-16CM: blocks 40/42 and 50/52 converted under CCIP (MSIP?)

There were fewer CGs converted to CMs as that fleet is getting old. But I believe the converted CGs kept the WARHUD.

The designators would have been “F-16G”, “F-16J” and “F-16M” except the government doesn’t like spending money on new things or something… maybe it was to get around the requirement to do a competitive runoff? But they’re all officially “F-16Cs”… even though they’re not :wink:

Keith Rosenkranz’s book “Vipers in the Storm” details F-16CG ops during the 1991 Desert Storm operations from a pilot’s view. I recommend it as a companion to Dan Hampton’s book to show how the aircraft and its mission changed over the years.

Most Block 40 /42s did keep the WARHUD or whatever which was one easy way to tell the US ones externally (some other blocks exported had WARHUD also).

Although that may be finally going: F-16.net - The ultimate F-16, F-35 and F-22 reference

Don’t know if CCIP was part of MSIP…dont remember seeing any association.

For BMS I recommend EZBoards - it will put all the important stuff from the briefing to your kneeboards in the cockpit.

God it would be amazing. Flying the Skyraider over Vietnam in VR. I’ve tried to do it with vorpX but it is a terrible experience.

I know but my notices are not only just the checklists despite written in the screenshot. There are my short versions of manuals, how to operate FCR in AA/AG modes, datalinks, etc. from my squadron teacher when we, a few years ago, were a part of Falcon BMS 4.33/34, school lessons when our squadron leader(-s) teach as a lot about everything in BMS include how to survive at the battlefield in single-player coop + Falcon Online PvP.
So those notes are just my own’ know-how, let’s say. :slight_smile: But one day I will share it with others.
