I get that we need accounts for some things. But I’ll never have a Facebook account.
"Facebook says that starting in October “everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account.” Existing users will be given the option to log in with their Facebook account and permanently merge their Oculus account with it.
Further, the company says that existing users who opt not to merge their Oculus account with their Facebook account can continue using their headset as normal until the end of 2022, after which the company no longer guarantees “full functionality” without the use of a Facebook account."
I’m on FB, and I have a Rift S.
Why you should be forced to link those two is beyond my understanding. As an option, why not? Maybe it will bring some cool social networking capabilities? But why should that be forced on users?
Yeah, clearly Faceboculus and me are going separate ways, soon.
Sell more VR headsets.
PSVR is the worlds bestselling VR headset.
It’s a simple solution and even kids know how to use it straight away. Hazzle free. Plug and play. This is what Oculus and Facebook are going for. VR for the masses, not the enthusiast. There are many of them and few of us.
There are a lot of FB users out there who probably think that the account solution is a good idea and welcome it. They want VR for socializing, watching a movie, visiting virtual events and play games. Nothing wrong with that, but that’s not why flightsimmers want VR.
I think you nailed it. They view VR as another data collection and advertising delivery device. Imagine virtual movie theaters and chat rooms with advertisements and posters and stuff like that. Games with branded balls and rackets… Bowling with friends with licensed music playing in the background. I mean, all of that could be fun…and could push VR into an even greater level of acceptance. I’m not a fan of Facebook though, so it is hard for me to pinch my nose and eat progress (progress?) when pushed by them.
I had a FB account once upon a time but haven’t been back in years, since they kept hounding me for details (hmmm, did I delete that???).
I told my wife almost a decade ago, “Honey, Facebook (and it’s ilk) is evil…”. She frowned. Later on what’s his face told congress, “…we can do better…”. And along cam Twitter, etc, etc…
Zactly! They (corporations, politicians, etc) plan on our, collectively, short memories. Gosh, there’s a phrase for this phenomenon that escapes me at the moment…or the inverse.
