Pimax Crystal VR headset

Yes indeed..

Interesting!

I thought 3D depth perception was as simple as binocular overlap… This mod seems to do more than just that though.

No clue. Maybe it’s doing a IPD-like trick, simulating your eyes are further apart? I didn’t spend a lot of time on the install part of the video. I mean, in VR I already get depth; I don’t notice it as much as when I started using VR which I guess boils down to ā€œI’m used to itā€ now.

I’m guessing the mod allows for finetuning to get a better depth perception as everybody has individual eye to lens distance and probably other individual parameters that may be important.

Well I tried it. for myself I seen no 3D improvemnt. If it works for tohers that is great but I seen no difference and it just seemed to have zoomed in the image..

I use a 3D Vision setup for many years and the trick there was to set the convergence higher with some stereo seperation and the effect we seen was called toyification..

it was worth a shot and I seen this mod some two weeks ago or so. thnx

A black box appeared as out of nowhere… :man_shrugging:

It contained black stuff…

The controllers were simply tucked into eachother and placed in the middle of the headset… I wonder how many RMA:s this generates..? OTOH, my lenses and controllers seem to have survived, so maybe I’m just overly cautious when it comes to packing stuff? I don’t think so… What do you think, @BeachAV8R?

The headset fit was…not. My forehead carries all the weight and there are big gaps at the temples. I had a similar experience when I got the Varjo Aero, so maybe I should take a hint. I’m just not like everybody else. But this headset (lack of) comfort reminds me of the FPV goggles I got from DJI…

The headset is huge, but doesn’t feel heavy. It’s just that it has an uneven pressure distribution on my head. Pimax has extra comfort facepads and a top strap for sale… I guess I’ll have to go shopping again…

Will plug it in once I’ve ran some FoV tests on my Aero, for comparison.

The stock fit is awful as you pointed out. Something with a strap that goes across your head (rather than front to back) is what I recomend. It will be so much better. I used about 3 ounces of Wheel Weights on the back (they already have adhesive) to force some weight distribution. Far as the side gaps are concerned, I lifted the foam, tucked in some packaging foam cut to fit and whala! Problem solved. You Will Enjoy the clarity once you dial it in. Congrats!

Thanks for the tips, @Maico!

I will experiment during the weekend. I haven’t plugged the headset in yet. Prioritzing my FFB stick. But yeah, I’m looking forward to see how 50PPD looks. The 37PPD of the Aero is really good, so I guess I’m in for a treat!

Woof, and I thought the 25 PPD of the Quest 3 was good.

And remind me, you don’t necessarily need more horsepower to run a 50PPD headset, because you can tone down the MSAA/DLSS and other up/downscaling?

And quadviews. Those make a huge difference on my setup.

It is. The Rift CV1 had 12-14.

PPD isn’t everything. You need good optics to experience the high resolution and more pixels mean more work…

I finally plugged in my Pimax Crystal Super Micro OLED (Phew! That’s a mouthful!). I can immediately say that I prefer the name of the Varjo Aero..!

The Pimax Play software is totally new to me so I will need some time to understand how it works, but I checked the IPD setting and that everything else looked ok.

I fired up DCS and the picture clarity and resolution was as expected, absolutely magnificent! I can finally read the caution displays in the Viggen! I remember this was something I talked about when I tried the Heatblur (then Leatherneck) Viggen in my Oculus Rift CV1, that one day we’d get a VR headset that has a resolution the will allow me to read even the caution displays, without leaning in… That day has come! Framerate was totally unplayable though, which was a disappointment. I remember reading @schurem commending the Quad Views, so I thought I’d check that out before lowering the resolution and man was he right..! Pimax does Quad Views differently than Varjo, it seems, because this really made a huge difference. In the Varjo Aero it was almost not noticeable. I set QV to performance and tried it out. FPS was smooth again but the tradeoff is a very noticeable difference between the foveated area and the rest. I ended up on the ultra setting, after some testing and performance is still very good. The Crystal Super has eye tracking so I can use Dynamic Foveated rendering and this is a hit and miss, so far. The screen seem to flicker a bit when I move my gaze around. I think I’ll need to tinker a bit with the settings.

I then thought I’d try going from 90Hz to 72Hz update frequency on the headset, to see if this was playable and this caused the headset to disconnect… No matter what I tried I got an error saying that the DP cable wasn’t connected. I ended up uninstalling everything Pimax and reinstalling it again, to get back to default settings. I must do some research as to why that happened. When I restarted the PC, after the disconnect, the Nvidia app updated itself. Could this have caused the disconnect..?

Before unplugging the Varjo Aero I did some FoV testing in the WIMFov app. I tried it with the Pimax too, as a comparison. Pics below. I don’t know why it says VR Headset Model: hedy, for the Aero, but it does. First pics are eyes separated and the last two pics are eyes combined.

The Pimax has a larger FoV, for sure, but I can’t say it was something I noticed when I put it on. The Pimax also has a larger overlap. I think the next version of Pimax Play will open up for experimenting with this…

So, with all new hardware comes a learning curve… I need to read the Pimax Discord and watch a few youtube reviews again, to see if I can pick up a hint or two. Please let me know if you remember hearing anything about the above, that might help me out.

Hmmm… Interesting!

Maybe I should try to print a more comfortable face mask…

Since I once accepted that the Varjo Aero didn’t come with audio, other than a headset jack, I guess I shouldn’t complain about the default speakers of the Pimax Crystal Super…

It’s a small speaker surrounded by a plastic box that leads the pressure waves towards your ear. The audio sounds pretty much like it comes from a hollow box, because it does. It’s not much to write home about, but at least it has integrated audio!

And you can upgrade it by getting Pimax’s DMAS headphones. Mounting them is as easy as removing the temple protection foam, which is attached by velcro and then unscrew a small philips head screw. Put the DMAS speaker in place and secure it with the screw.

The DMAS speakers improved the audio by…a lot.

I also got a tip online that the flickering I saw when utilizing quad views and dynamic foveated rendering is the foveated square (the high res area) that moves around with my gaze. Setting sharpening to 0 took care of almost all flickering.

The Pimax is growing on me!

Now I have higher resolution, wider FoV, better picture clarity, colors and great sound, with better performance, compared to the Varjo Aero. I guess this comes as no surprise after 4 years of technical progress that separates the two VR headsets.

I just need to do something about the uncomfortable fit of the Pimax…

When I ordered my Super last year evidently I qualified for a free set of DMAS speakers, so I never used the standard ones. I can say that the sound quality with the DMAS speakers is noticeably better than what you get with the Quest 3 (which isn’t all that bad tbh).

I have been playing with the Super a bit over the past couple of days and I am getting playable results with DCS. It’s not that much better with regard to looking at cockpits details (it is better), but the outside world looks significantly sharper. I will have to try setting the sharpening to zero.
