What we watching? – Mudspike at the movies

Agree, it’s quite brilliant.

That said I guess it takes a bit of media literacy to understand the point it’s making…

Other than the overt religious overtones, what I took away from it was that violence begets violence and hatred begets hatred and we are doomed to repeat history - ‘What has happened before will happen again’.

That and the monologue about what women are subjected to… That piece was honestly straight to the point.

Like- most of the movie was padding slowly funneling the viewers to reach that point.

EDIT: Been thinking about this part though…

and I think there are more “existentialists” tones rather than religious.
But it might be quite subjective.

I guess it really does come down to individual experience and perspective, because now you have said it. “what women are subjected to…” I can see it, but for me the most powerful characters were all female and the men although in positions of authority had very little ‘influence’.

As for religious overtones, it really spans the history of humanity (which is apt considering how the series ends) from the pantheon of Greek gods to commentary on Christianity and the 12 tribes of Israel…

Good points. It takes more than a chat for me to elaborate on them… Wish I could buy you a beer and chat about it over ribs or something.

All that plus it was a fun film. Mattel stole a German idea, used it to reflect and amplify the worst conceptions of femininity and made billions doing it. The film could have ignored that. They could have filled the screen with a sweet, cheeky story and zero controversy and it would have probably done OK. Instead it was a sweet, cheeky story that pushed Mattel’s buttons a little. It wasn’t a piece of art saying “stick it to the man!” The man (Mattel) won big time. It was rather a very comercial work that successfully made being slightly uncomfortable entertaining.

I mean, I would come for a visit to verify myself, but y’all have spiders bigger than my dog and I can’t have a gun. :man_shrugging:

I’m kidding. It’s on the travel list for our 10 year anniversary in 2031. She’s not done seeing Europe yet.

I am watching Longmire with my wife on Prime.

It feels… strangely nice. Kinda slow but still suspenseful. Good actors and beautiful scenery, too.

You make it through the first season I can almost guarantee you will end up watching the full series.

I’m a little late to the show, but watched Fury the other day. Brutal depiction of tank warfare in WW2. Excellent cinematography and soundtrack.

Agree, couldn’t care less for the rivet counter- the film per se was crafted with mad love. I had a hard time watching it twice- but I loved every second of it.

As an ex-Tankie it is hard not be a rivet counter, although I enjoyed it for what it is…

But the best WWII ‘tank’ movie is and remains Kelly’s Heroes
