CaptainSim threatens it's community and customers

True

I wonder what drove them to do this. I find it hard to see the upside of it for anyone.

Provided they plugged a custom 3D model to a stock 747, maybe they target those who fly only from external view and as long as the door opens and closes, they call it good enough.

Then not letting the comminity create liveries makes sense if they want to sell their own.

I disagree with their practice. I am curious though how this dispute ends.

This isn’t a new behavior for Captain Sim and a few other publishers. As a long time (perhaps now former) purchaser of their products, CS likes to up-charge customers. You have to maintain a “license” in order to download the product after a time period, receive updates, and download livery packs created after initial release. This is somewhat similar to how VRS operates.

IME, FS/P3D owners have always seemed to more readily pay for product than those who prefer XP. MSFS somewhat changed the model, at least as far as terrain, when they included the whole world. I’m guessing that there were a bunch of XP pilots who used this as an opportunity to try MSFS, and haven’t been back to their old standard since.

Orbx, perhaps proving the naysayers wrong, lead the charge of the traditional add-on publishers back to their bread and butter. It’s taken a while for them to catch up, but I expect that in time, most of what I consider expensive or boutique add-on publishers will find their way back and we’ll have situation normal.

As far as CS, their appeal, or lack thereof, is in their study sim lite approach. You get most of the meat, without the gravy or garnishes. They deliver an operating aircraft, which will be more thoroughly developed over time. You just have to maintain that “license” to enjoy that development. At least that’s been their modus operandi until now. Liveries included. They don’t want to give up their revenue stream without a fight. Whether consumers will resist that attempt remains to be seen.

I don’t see it as complicated.

I see it as rank hypocrisy. CS uses part of something created by Asobo with impunity, in what most agree is a cash grab, then tries to bring the hammer down on others? I can almost guarantee you that the question you asked will be avoided at all costs by the very people that put this silliness in motion.

As a texturer this move is shi**ier than a baby diaper after taco bell.

Absolutely disgusting.
I have no idea how came up with this but it’s literally the worst thing you can do to any community.

By the way, are they next going to say that any mods that make the plane better are now also their property?

Too much snowflakes! I not see any end of the world neither the things going worst because of that. I think is that people is making a too much drama and fuss because all that. I +/- understood and i think i guess that their copy protection system is in their ACE utility (that also controls the liveries distribution. So i guess that one of their biggest reason is quallity control of that liveries and a some kind of capping the features to the ones that not have a legal copy of the aircraft.

This sometimes makes me think like the anticheating/copying/hacking softwares in some games, the guys that cry loud more are the ones that prevaricate more and create a drama with logic reasons that always have followers.

As a aircraft user, if you want the livery, believe me that installation using ACE tool is way too much more easy using that tool than going to a website, download the file, don’t know were it goes, were to unzip it etc etc.
As a painter instead of sending to website X send to website Y and that Y for sure customers see that using the centralized tool. So i really not see so much drama here. I know that it could be addressed by CS in a more soft way, but i think the people are over reacting for having fun and pleasure of a drama scandal.

They not remove the liveries, neither not allow them, only control the quality curating them and control the distribution. You have 100s of other companies (including Apple) that do that and its not the end of iphones community.

I think is too much drama for nothing. Don’t like not buy their products.

And the questions asked are still not answered…

I think in their forum, explicitally said that their issues is with paints done using their paintkits. If you get a blank white photoshop pic and distribute it, no issues.

Even were that the case, Its a difference that makes no difference. Now that the community is angry, people will go far out of their way to create workarounds just to thumb their noses at this sort of nonsense. I would not be surprised to see any “official” paint kit quickly go the way of the Dodo as far as anyone being willing to use it.

The work around is to not buy it… if enough people vote with their wallets, the message will get through to Captain Sim loud and clear.

Done!

This would have been my first purchase from them. Instead, they are now highlighted in neon on my list of companies to ignore/avoid.

Its interesting. On another forum, the first reaction was quite bad to this plane, but then, after further examination, sentiment began to warm up towards it.

Then they shot themselves in both feet.

I agree was a nasty move that could be done in a more diplomatic way

One could argue that the snowflakes in this instance, is CaptainSim for not being able to accept competing distribution of the liveries. If their distribution ensures quality and ease of installation, people would prefer it over downloading it elsewhere…
CS don’t get what they want? Call the lawyers!

Other than threatening with legal action…?
Yes, they probably could’ve made their point in another way. In any other way…

When people fear the monetary loss sometimes they almost look repenting…

May have been their consumers that caused the change of position or they may have found out after the fact that they do not have the biggest financial stick to force the issue. All too often it is the one with the biggest pocket book that wins in this situation since they can force a settlement favorable to themselves and not the merits of the case.
