Yep, one of the fun things about Condor is you can fly in terrifying scenery with very few landout opportunities. Raises the stress levels.
Yesss! Finally I flew decently. It was a tough Alpine task. Scarce but strong thermals that capped low. Some decent ridge conditions but the ridges worked in the direction of the courses only rarely. I finished 14th of a field of about 40 finishing with a time of 1:40 about 10 minutes behind the leader. I finished about 5 minutes ago and my heart is still racing. I have never had such high adrenaline rushes in virtual combat. Nature is scarier.
This ridge saved me!
I downloaded a scenery pack for New Zealand. No trees unfortunately, but flying around Queenstown was a great experience in VR. I did a 38 minute flight from a winch launch at NZQN. I caught some lift at Coronet Peak, eventually climbing above the summit. Next, I headed over to Ben Lomond, which overlooks the town. I caught some considerable sink on the leeward side, almost putting me in a precarious position, but I was able to distance myself from the mountain and make it back to NZQN with some altitude to spare.
You guys are tilting me toward this!
Don’t blame me… this is all on Eric! ;). This is some of the most enjoyable sim flying I have done. Apart from the initial purchase, it really doesn’t cost all that much. The DLC gliders are a little over $10 each if you choose not to buy them all in a bundle with the base sim (which already comes with 7 gliders as standard). I’m probably going to flesh out my Condor hangar…because, well, you know me by now.
The Condor Club, that’s a membership to a seperate sight to be able to get scenery? Just making sure I understand what I’m about to get myself into lol
Yes, that’s correct. It’s free to join, but they throttle the downloads. Eric @smokinhole recommended paying the annual subscription to unthrottle the downloads, so I did. Some of the downloads are big, so I think it is worth it. The site is also where you can sign up for the online competitions.
TY, alright time to click the buy button
Outstanding!
Working my way through flight school, it runs very well and looks quite good doing it. If you have an interest in the subject, I would definitely recommend it.
Added: Also winch launches?! I am so going to have to try that least once in my life. It’s pretty epic even on my laptop, I can’t imagine doing it in person.
Well that was embarrassing. After telling @PaulRix that I might have to leave his Noobie a** in the dust while I show my soaring prowess, I proceeded to make a series of very odd decisions which he had the good sense not to duplicate. I ended up clipping a tree while in very strong ridge lift and died (I was watching what I thought was going to be another glider about to land in the valley below.) I was too disgusted with myself to stick around but I don’t doubt he will come back here to report success. Anyway, Mudspikers Unite!
Oh, don’t worry, I didn’t make it either…although I fought hard, but in the end I ran out of altitude, lift and ideas, resulting in ‘Landing out’… I uploaded my flight plan file, and at the time of writing I came in 25th, but I am sure my final result will be lower once all the participants upload their files.
My shiny new ASK 21…
The map showing my flight plot. Not the easiest to read, especially when the plot is a red line, and so are some of the roads… but if you look carefully you can figure it out.
A zoomed in view of my final battle. I just didn’t have the altitude to reach turnpoint 3. I tried hard to find enough lift, but it didn’t work out.
Much kudos and thanks to Eric. He talked me through getting set up for this event, with very limited time before the event kicked off. I had a blast! Oh, and I managed to stay aloft almost 2 hours. So that’s a personal record so far!
edit> so after all the results came in, my position was 27th.
Me too…
Nobody has not recommended that we buy it.
Waiting for ‘Stay At Home’ sale
Well THAT’s not going to happen. Those guys are making a ! Sorry you didn’t make it @PaulRix. But I am glad we could fly together for a bit.
I know the one. That thing looked like a death trap but everyone who flew it came back with a smile on the face.
I’ve seen this one fly loads of times at shuttleworth
Oh, well if that is tripping you up, I recommend that you not buy it because reasons.
Oh, well in that case… Where’s my credit card?
Great thread! I’ve been dabbling with Condor 2 for a while … the thing is brilliant in VR! Just like the Dirt Rally 2.0 League thread got me back into rally driving, this thread has inspired me to sink my teeth back into soaring. Would be fun to get a Condor 2 League going!
I concur with everyone above that a membership with Condor Club is pretty much essential. The one year membership is inexpensive and it gives you fast access to their entire library of Landscapes. Just make sure you have enough space. After downloading all the new Landscapes (because I can), my Landscapes folder will be in excess of 1 Terabyte!!
Cheers!
^^^ Very beautiful!
I landed out again on the USNS server. Perhaps the only pilot of 50+ to do so. Clearly I am bad at this. Still fun.
