DCS 2.7 Discussion

Could it be? In a short time (ED/DCS world clock) we might have Phantoms, Crusaders, Skyhawks, and Intruders, with Mig21/19’s to thwart our advances?. Could it be? We could put a good, historically accurate-ish, hurting on…err…Guam I guess.

Given the A-6 we’ve seen modeled, we’d be looking at a Desert Storm kind of timeframe or shortly thereafter. The A-6 we’ve seen is a SWIP bird and I have a feeling those Intruder jocks from the 60s would have loved a SWIP variant. Especially those poor sods that had to deal with DIANE.

Still, I’m not one to judge those who want to hurtle at such superior odds in a MiG-21 or even 19. After all, it is to better to die good than live weak! Do not, my friends, become addicted to PGMs. They will take hold of you and you will forever resent their absence. Embrace the MiG. Embrace the R-3R. Embrace the R-3S. Embrace the guns! For that will guarantee your salvation. You are then awaited!

You shall ride eternal, shiny and chrome.

I figure it’s too much to ask to get all the variants for the entire run. But, I can limit my loadouts and if I squint I’ll have the taste of it all. Just need a real “Jungle by the sea” map of about 1.5+ million sq/km’s.

I mean the MiG-21 we have is also the wrong version…

I’ve largely come to terms with not having exactly the right plane. At least we have well modelled systems in DCS, unlike IL2 where they have exactly the right variant but because there’s so much abstraction between you and the plane that you largely can’t tell the difference anyway!

The one era I had problems with was WWII where we had for the longest time only mid war Allied fighters and only late war Axis fighters. But they’ve fixed that now. They just need to remove the nuclear power plant from the Channel map :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

So I’ve laughed at the “jungle by the sea” map jokes for years…but does that reference something specific? Did ED refuse a Vietnam map at some point in the past?

Not that I know of. It just seems that way.

Very true, the VPAF didn’t operate the MiG-21bis until '79. However, the disparity there will be a negative one.

So, the Intruder we’ve seen from HB is a SWIP bird according to its BuNo. Just assuming you’re not an Intruder obsessive like I, SWIP Intruders carried SLAMs, Mavericks, and HARMs. The '90s Intruder was an absolute beast when compared to even early Es and especially the DIANE birds.

Now, the MiG-21 has the opposite issue for the theatre. I’d actually say it’s slightly worse. Now, the 21bis is the ultimate production MiG-21, I won’t deny that. However, it’s designed as a tactical fighter or rather the Fishbed-N we have is as it lacks the Lazur GCI system. The 21bis was a reaction to trends at the time of creating more and more flexible fighters and, while the Fishbed-L is still a pure interceptor, the Fishbed-N is envisioned more with that flexibility in mind.

The VPAF operated a number of MiG-21s; F-13s, PFs, PFMs, PFL. They’re all lighter than the bis. Quite a bit, too, when you consider the F-13. And how the employed them? Distinctive. They’re rely on a loadout in which the only constant was a pair of Atolls. The variable was probably drop tanks. They’d save as much fuel as possible so they could perform this singular screaming attack run, hurl their Atolls at American formations, and then use the energy and speed they’ve built up to turn and run before American escorts could accelerate to them.

The reason for this doctrine is that the VPAF never had that many MiG-21s. The Fishbed was a precious commodity to the VPAF. At their peak, they’d only have a paltry sum of 9-10 airframes operational. It fluctuates given the length of the conflict, but the MiG-21 numbers they had were still pretty modest. This is why Operation Bolo, which Olds claims he netted 7 MiG-21s and according to the VPAF cost them 5, was so devastating; They did not have the Fishbeds to spare.

History lesson aside, I’m not sure the MiG-21bis would be as survivable at this than the lighter, older Fishbeds.

Well, in my opinion, Jabbers is not wrong. 4:06 in a (brutally honest) nutshell.

I can also relate to his content creation gripes. I’ve casually made tutorials and such over the years, but it’s really a “full time job”.

I suspect this video will go viral and rattle a few cages. Might be a good thing…

Can’t disagree with the premise of his argument. I respect Jabbers, who has the experience, creativity, and critical thinking to keep his content compelling. However, I also see many talented content creators burnout. It’s not the creativity, but the pace at which they have to turn it out to make it profitable. Therefore, building a channel in one sim/game/platform is most likely doomed from the onset. At least in the numbers that combat flight sims generate. My kids like to watch YT videos of other people playing games like Roblox and Among Us and the creators’ subs are sometimes in the tens of millions. Not as tough going for them probably.

With regards to DCS, what’s drawn me back in an the last year undoubtedly is Reflected’s campaigns. Paradise Lost is huge fun. The AI can be maddening at times, but creative campaign builders, like Reflected and Baltic Dragon seem to be able to work around their deficiencies enough to keep things interesting.

But perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea. If I were not husband and dad, I could see myself joining a virtual Naval air group or WW2 squad and having a good time. Maybe a virtual cargo operation.

Regardless, I understand that I’m part of a minority and grateful for the YT channels, like Ward Carroll’s, that keep producing compelling content . I hope Jabbers either finds a new interest that keeps him motivated to create, or throws in the towel and just enjoys gaming without the stress of having to stream or capture it.

Well, he’s expressing his opinion, so how can he be wrong?
His opinion doesn’t coincide with mine, but that’s just how opinions go…
What did he say right in the beginning of the video?
He did DCS non stop for 6 years, or so?
That’s a long time to treat any game as a full time job.
DCS actually has content to keep a guy busy, at that pace, for 6 years…! That’s a lot of game.
I’d probably burn out too, if I spent that much time with it.
But I don’t. Not even close.
I’ve stayed with DCS as my go to Flightsim entertainment for…a long time. I’ve seen it evolve and improve a lot over the years. So, I guess his comment about nothing changes and that money from a module just goes into the next, is well…only partially true. Again, IMO.
That said, a lot of things could’ve been done differently. I’m not so sure this sandbox model is the best way forward. Maybe the old school study sim approach was better. Make one, or two, airframes and a map. Box it and ship it, patch it a few times an leave it. Move on to the next. That way they would get to finish the modules and stop fixing them again with every new lighting or radar or damage model development. I don’t know…?

I’m basically in the same boat. 6~7 years non-stop, minus the YouTube content. Everything he mentioned about the lack of progress on core functions really resonates with me and really kills the game side for me. Aside from campaigns and multiplayer DCS is so sterile it’s easy to get bored. The former doesn’t have much replayability. The latter is impossible for me with my timezone and life schedule.

The whole DMCA abuse he mentioned is starting to turn me off from their behavior as well. Thinned-skinned. I will probably only purchase 3rd party modules from here out after the Apache.

Good god! What a load of whining, self-important BS! No one had a gun to his head. I’ve never heard of the guy. I don’t watch him, or Mover or Casmo (although I do support the podcast because I like interviews with interesting people). Influencer commentary is a vacuous world of pointlessness.

Plus, he’s wrong. They have improved the base game plenty over the last few years. He can spout “f…ing nothing!” all he wants. He is verifiably incorrect. Now the specific aspects of the game that he cherishes might not have been addressed. And if so, say so. That would be honest. Fall on that sword and walk away.

I am not a creator or streamer by any means, I only dabble in some mission creation for casual flying with friends. And even then, the buggy nature of DCS becomes apparent and makes creating content much harder than it should be. This has not changed much.

So I understand your pain, at least a little bit. It must be incredibly frustrating to work seriously with DCS.

At the same time, I agree with @smokinhole that ED has shown the will and especially since Kate took the lead, demonstrated progress in these areas. And I personally hugely enjoy DCS and am thankful to ED for improving it constantly. I think they are doing well, especially considering how difficult these things, like AI, are and the incredible age of their codebase. Being a developer myself, I don’t envy those programmers.

As @Clutch says, multiplayer and campaigns are amazing, so that is what I mostly play.
But doing DCS content creation for work…? I’m quite sure I would hate DCS within a week.
