Thing updated fine for me. Experimenting a bit to see what broke (on of the mods broke the comms menu) and if OpenXR still wildly outperforms SteamVR (it does).
I got stuck twice on the install but restarted and it went with no issue.
I knew new atmospheric effects were added in this udpate (like sun halo) but was surprise to see ED modelled glory.
Sorry about thatā¦and Thank You I believe itās fixed now
Wow Iām getting horrible download speeds .5 mb second
You guys get weird graphics in the cockpit mirrors or is it just my end?
Nice. Is that a āthingā youād see with the naked eye, or only through a camera lense? And are these map-specific? Iād find out for myself but waiting for a break.
They are not map specific. I guess they are an effect of sunlight getting refracted by the moisture in the cloud. Looks nice. Shadow of ownship in it would be perfection:
I donāt think itās a map specific like the map lighting. There is also sun halo modelled at higher altitudes. Regarding glory, I linked wiki article in that vid description.
So thatās what itās called! Iāve seen it a few times when traveling and could never find out what it was because I didnāt know what it was called.
Seeing this was always my favourite. Saw it a few times each year. Never with a camera ready in time
I fixed my radios by doing a repair. I think a leftover from my VAICOM installation borked it.
The mirrors I fixed by turning off motion blur. I donāt know when, why or how that got turned on!
With shadows set to medium, Iām getting fairly acceptable performance now.
So how is VR performanceā¦?
The shadow of your aircraft should always be in the middle of the gloryā¦ But aircraft shadow on clouds isnāt simulated, I think?
Performance is a crapshoot for me.
Dive bombing in jets with ground map radar and TGP on NTTR is locked at 36FPS (the norm for me) and smooth enough.
A bomber escort in P-47 and TF-51 over the channel is a literal slideshow - 8ish FPS. Unless the B-17ās are a performance drainā¦I canāt make sense of it at all. Iāve not flown WW2 aircraft prior to trialing them in 2.8 and it was an utter disappointment.
Iāve only cruised around the Channel map in the Tomcat a bit, so not much of a benchmark. But, Iām seeing pretty much the same performance as before with the 3090ti. Locked and smooth at 45. I should try one of Reflectedās WW2 escort missions to warm up the silicon.
I had 2 quick tests as i was time limited
Huey free flight with openzvr at 80% and lots of eye candy looked smooth and trying the new frame counter i got a steady 60fps
Spitfire furball on channel map with doras stayed around 30fps but seems smoother
Its not just VR thatās having a performance issue. In the benchmark tracks Iāve run Iām seeing 8-10 fps loss in average framerates.
From what Iāve been reading across reddit, dcs forums and social media the VR fanboys have the pitchforks out already since they think they were promised āVR Optimizationsā. I think what was communicated as VR optimizations for clouds got translated into an expectation of VR performance increase across the board which is unfortunate for the dev team.
I was expecting better performance in and around rain clouds but I still see the same heavy FPS hit as before. Hopefully the team can get it sorted next week with a hotfix.
I agree. This a raw, new chapter. Itās going to take time and iterations and eventually itāll turn out fine. I see lots of potential in there, and the clouds look wonderful on my system.
The pitchforks are out for sure, but to be honest Iām on Mudspike to avoid that madness.
I did notice that a few of my settings changed, so Iām going to do some tinkering later.
Remember when 2.7 came out, it was a massive boost for performance, then it dipped again as the version progressed before coming back to great againā¦
Iām sure this is only temporary.
I just feel bad for ED because thereās a subset of the customer base out there that thinks every update is going to magically bring them some 20 fps boost in VR. When it doesnāt materialize the whining and crying begins. Then it goes to āoh well when multicore and/or vulkan comes that will solve everything!ā. Multicore is not going to be some silver bullet for VR either. People need to realize that VR is a very immature tech and its not going to be smooth sailing for many years.
