Yassssss! Also itching to fly the Tomcat with CBU-99 and TARPS+bomb combos.
this a an error in the GDEM data.
Of course itās an error in the GDEM data, itās always one GDEM error after another, GDEM it!
The error on the 352ndVFG map is also pretty much the entire Southern border of the map. As I seem to recall the English side of the map and the channel itself did not have the problem. However the entire Southern and Eastern sides on the French side of the map had the cliff.

This is where is storaged the excessive GB of that dcs theaters (under the carpet)ā¦
The Chinook is a blast now with the LCT/DASH and improved AFCS modeling. Shuttling internal cargo between capture points in ādynamicā missions like Foothold is surprisingly satisfying.
And Kola just keeps getting better. Iām constantly amazed at the massive size of the map. It can be sunset at one end and night in the other.
I just Viggened around the Lofoten islands today, stresstesting my SUL37 Stick grip.
I flew up past AndĆøya, up to TromsĆø and low level to Bardufoss and out to AndĆøya again. It was sunset and winter and everything lookedā¦just right! I was flying along, lower than when I saw what I thought was a graphics glitch on the crest of a hill. As I got closer, I realized it was the setting sun, reflecting light on powerlinesā¦!
It blew my mind a littleā¦
I was messing around on kola and found what looks like an unfinished open cast mine ā¦ was pretty cool to fly around
The LKAB mine in Kiruna, perhaps?
that name of a town sounds familiar
Being semantic here (fancy word for jerk)āso, given that the map is flat, errrrmmm, not so sure ābout that.
Well, since itās a simulator, it only simulates the light from a simulated sun
There are quite a lot of them around the map but Kiruna is by far the biggest one. If you look at it on Google maps the truly mind boggling scale becomes apparent and as far as I know they are currently in the process of moving the entire town of Kiruna to expand the mine further. The iron ore trains on the Kiruna Narvik line are pretty cool as well. They even developed locomotives specifically to pull these trains and the recent patch already has train tracks at what will one day become the town of Narvik
The mine has expanded under the city, so they had to move for safety reasons. I was there this summer and itās quite special to see an entire city with no old houses And since they had the opportunity to design the city, before starting to build it, it is quite a sight to behold.
we should get a list of sightseeing locations for the maps, it may also be good for the mission makers hereā¦ so they can add them in to missions
Dude, you must be psychotic! Err, psychic. Iāve been toying with putting out a request here for that very thing. Iām adding āspecialā targets (broad categorization), or targets with unique features based on research.
The map doesnāt matter so much even though Iām working on Syria (then likely Caucasus, PGā¦waiting for Afghanistan & Iraq to be more complete). An example is the LaFarge cement factory in Syria; a noted target; the Nuc site, also in Syria (DCS map has nothing there but we can fix that).
Caves (as mentioned above); in Afghanistan these were targets early on especially.
Shoot. Iām just gonna start a new thread on thisā¦
I know itās evil but the Kola NPP has a very nice damage model
Perfect, Iāll add it to that post (I just created). Thank you.
I donāt know how they coded it but it works. Last night I was flying around Andoya, checked around the map with the F10 map and F11 camera when I finished. It was pitch black in Murmansk. Twilight in Andoya. And sunset in Bodo all at the same time.
Iāve heard in the past that they did āmodelā the curvature of the Earth for some things (at least for RADAR LOS). I havenāt thought much about it but I donāt think it would be too difficult to cypher a ācurveā into things like this, ie; add that equation to the position of the sun based on your location, yadda, yadda, yadda.
