Sure, however, it’s something I feel quite strongly about. From the POV of those who like to put some time aside and fire up their favourite bird without interruptions, there’s already been an upset in the last year when DCS decided that 3 days was the maximum any person could bear to be offline… fortunately they’ve reversed that (for those of us with patchy internet) but it’s a mild concern that everything else is drifting towards a software-as-service model.
Now if some people wish for a subscription model and they have additional access - like a patreon account - there’s potential for those who would get a benefit from that.
And here lies the crux of the matter…
Hm… Could be a good idea, actually.
Or, ED could sell stuff.
I had a t-shirt printing store for an event at work. I just uploaded the designs and set the price. For this event, I sold at cost, but I just as easily have made a couple of bucks per shirt.
I bet the same can be done at some online printing service, where they could outsource manual printing, with some cool binders.
I would wear the frak out of DCS branded apparel!
Maybe they could print F-16 manuals…
We are cord cutters, but have good antenna reception for major networks. The other Saturday I turn on ABC at 2PM when you would expect sports and amazingly they had e-sports on. Overwatch.
I was amazed that video games were on the major network during such a prime time, but could not make heads or tales of what was going on or who was winning.
Competitive, professional air quake using DCS though? Gods that would be so damn cool to watch at a competitive level. If they nailed down the camera to keep things interesting it would be far more accessible to the masses than Overwatch I think. How cool would that be! Recruit some combat veterans…
Advertising, marketing and licensing revenue for ED. You never know. A man can dream.
Edit: the most amusing part of the Overwatch tournament were the live announcers. They were playing it like any other sport, getting all excited as they called the plays.
“Rag3rM0use” jumps! He jumps again! FULL SHOTGUN BLAST TO THE FACE! Scoooorrrreeeeee!!!"
Ask youtube for SATAL recaps. Pretty much what you dream of
I get all that, i’m not a big fan of subscriptions either.
The fact remains that their current business model has them backed into a corner mostly developing things that they can sell, instead of also spending time on other areas that have been neglected for a long time (AI ground and air, weather simulation, comms, damage models, simulation of fragmentation damage, weapon flight models and guidance logic, etc.). I just keep wondering if something could be done about that without splitting DCS into 50 DLC parts.
Sounds like the concerns are at least being heard.
Sorry guys, I been meaning to come over here and chat too. Been busy with the forums and Discord, and well Hoggit, I think I will take a breather from there for a while.
The concerns about this are very much being looked over, and if there is a technical way to do this, and ED not to give away too much, they will figure it out. I haven’t read through this entire thread, sorry I probably wont. I know the concerns, and the many ideas though, and I have passed on as much as I can to the team, not to mention Wags was right in the thick of it as well.
Honestly? All this rage is ridiculous.
The module is worth a lot, packed with features as it is.
I’m willing to pay 30$ no question asked.
heh, you may want to take a moment to read our thread on this. No rage at all here
QFFT.
I’m willing to pay whatever you guys ask for it. You have my sword credit card almost unconditionally.
The only thing we are really looking at is a solution to the server block.
I don’t envy you and Wags having to deal with Hoggit. I thought that their criticism was somewhat tempered over the past year but with the posts of the last few days, the signal-to-noise ration over there went to jamming levels. If I was to summarise the posts above, we all mostly feel that there is a balance to achieve with regard to the effort and cost put into this feature and the return. The biggest concern is probably the fragmentation of the multiplayer base but, as you said, you have all of that information from multiple sources already.
Oh and happy cake day, as well call it here: the anniversary of you joining this site. :-). Same goes for @sobek and @Troll. Happy cake day!
Hey Eagle Dynamics, go spend an incredible amount of time doing research, development, and production of a first time ever flight simulation add-on module then be prepared to hear some whiners squeak about paying for it. Ridiculous.
Such unnecessary angst and teeth gnashing. Again.
But when you release it, and charge a completely viable fee for it, please don’t take it out of the oven too early. That is a problem.
I’m way more concerned about “early access” with lusted content taking years to get multiple basic systems functional. That seems to be a greater threat to DCS than any other aspect. And certainly more of an issue than the concept of add-on modules.
They have been really good for a while now, with just a few bad eggs, but its just turned a corner again, and I cant spend so much time trying to battle what is not winnable over there, and honestly the mods really allow way too much in the way of personal insults.
ANYWAYS, don’t wanna derail this topic. Its good when the community communicates in a mature and constructive way, makes it easier to pass that info to the team for sure, and they had a lot passed to them.
Wags is doing an incredible amount of testing and work on the Carrier stuff right now, it will still need mass testing in EA I am sure, but we do our best to get it as good as possible out of the gates.
I want to chime in and say this is NOT about the price, at least not for most people I talked to.
It is mostly about fractioning the community, an issue which I hope will be addressed.
For me personally it is also about the sim as a whole. We need a proper ATC, it belongs to the simulator. The system right now sucks and improvements have been “in the works” since 2011 or so.
Now finally getting something, but only for the carrier ops and only after paying, that creates a sour taste in my mouth, regardless of the price.
Ah, the good old battle of technical limitations and external expectations rears it head once more.
I hope they can work out a solution, and we can all return to flying calmer skies.
Yeah, I took a look at some forums and it seems people are getting a tad too wound up by that little info.
DCSW is on a good way. Sure, not everything is perfect but some guys act as if the sky was falling.
Same here. If I like the look of something I’ll buy it. I’m not interested if it cuts of sections of the online play. I am not too keen on the i-16 so I won’t buy it. But carrier ops with people running around and better interactions and immersion would be definitely up my street.
Do we really need all the angry nonsense
