DCS Chinook

I’m listening to this right now, which although discusses the MH-47, is still very much a catalyst to learn the big best.

When I’m initially learning or trying to get current in a DCS module, I use notes that I drop in a HOW TO folder that I can access on my PC or iPad. In the sim since I’m usually in VR, I use OpenKneeboard to quickly pull up the HOW TO folder’s contents as a quick review. To that end, I’ve been working on some for the CH-47F and thought that they might save an aspiring Chinook pilots some time. I also include a link to the YouTube video that I used for reference. The module is new and very unfinished, but here are the first three that I’ve done for the CH-47F.

CH-47F QUICK STARTUP.txt (942 Bytes)

CH-47F SLING LOADING.txt (887 Bytes)

CH-47F WEAPONS.txt (678 Bytes)

Please feel free to edit and/or add your own. Still needed: radios and navigation.

CH-47F RADIOS AND TACAN.txt (879 Bytes)

Discusses using preset frequencies and TACAN (currently DME inop).

TCN DME used to work. Did it break recently?

This guy mentions it 5 months ago (chapter 5). I didn’t start flying the Chinook much until about a month ago. Anyway, I’m not seeing the DME info either. Maybe I’m missing a button.

It worked last time I flew in February, I thought. I’ll check again. The tacan setup in the Hook is pretty weird in general.

Anyone have any suggestions on flying with the slung L118 gun? Keep it under 80 knots etc? I have a heck of a time getting it stable and eventually it decides it’s had enough and breaks free.

Yes basically you need to go slow. 60-80kn is the maximum I was able to keep it from swinging, a little slower in windy and turbulent conditions

Agreed. Slow to 55-60 to manoeuvre

Slowed down to 50-60kts and worked a treat. Thanks!

I have the module too, and I just need to practice landing it without breaking something. Either the damage model is too sensitive or maybe I just need to practice more and more with it.

I haven’t flown her in a couple months but landings have always felt off to me. It’s as if there’s no ground effect and I have to pull heaps of collective in the region where I would expect GE to come into play, which is quite different than my experience flying…pretty much all the other helos in DCS.

Watching some real CH-47 pilots on YT, rear wheels first, and keep the descent rate below 500fpm. @Clutch, I get what you’re saying about GE seeming to be light or non-existent compared to the other helo’s.

I can highly recommend 47Driver’s videos, he’s an actual CH-47 pilot. Unfortunately, he didn’t make a lot of videos, but what he did is well worth watching.
