Those are just
, how do you say, incredibilmente bella?
Aerial gunnery practice with on-call drones programmed to do break turns at certain points so I can work on deflection shooting.
Little bit of practice time today ahead of our Syria campaign
4-wire on first try with ACLS.
There’s something exhilarating about seeing that thick plume of smoke tracking your target. But after all these years it seems sparrows still love chaff so much from all aspects.
Nice - in DCS today what’s the rough effective range of the Sparrow? Plus, is it worth using Jester to STT stuff or just use PAL mode (which I think it out to 15nm or so?)
In the Tomcat realistic range on medium altitude is around 10nm for a high PK shot.
I guess you could try to go Mach 1.x and 40k high but you risk losing the contact in the notch if you look down.
PAL works really good. Use TWS to get some situational awareness before.
Kinematically, I am believing it’s supposedly like 25 miles. Practically, I feel that the range of the sparrow is just on the edge of what you can see, or what is coming for you really fast beyond of the edge of what you can just see. This is mostly because of how omnisentient AI planes are of launches on them, despite us Fulcrum drivers barely making sense of our SPO-15 (never mind the older planes..). They will defend and drop countermeasures immediately upon release. Pretty much what @miRage said.
If you can PAL, you PAL unless there is some special condition why you shouldn’t like a furball with friendlies or the weather doesn’t really permit you seeing the bandit anywhere. Jester can be slightly silly, like following TWS on a group of bogeys that are not relevant for the fight ahead. But you can select specific targets for Jester and then elect to shoot them from TWS with the phoenix or have him hardlock them, at which point the AWG-9 is not eager to drop the lock.
You can also open the ACM cover and just mad dog those phoenixes if jester is really fumbling the radar.
Practiced a bit tonight in case I get a chance at multicrew for the Syria campaign.
Years since I’ve flown this..
@Freak I am ready I think!
Love it!!
Trying to learn the back seat of the F14. Marvelous place but very understandable this was someone’s full time job back in the day. Trying to make sense of all the screens and controls.
And we got a phoenix of the rail. Very much out of constraints but I managed to launch on someone from the back seat.
Oh Iceman.. What are you doing? We have a fight to win and a fleet to defend!
Lined up a much better shot.
Trying this again but for launching a sparrow.. I should be in constraints soon..
Fox-1, 30ish miles! The missile falls way short with no loft or anything. That’s probably my fault.
Trying this again from much closer. You really need to micro iceman with his turns. I wish I could command him to chase the ASE dot
