This was one of the first flight sims I played with a good number of flyable aircraft
Birds of Prey had a flyable Viggen…!
cant remember … but there were a lot of planes
just checked … there was a gripen but no viggen
Ah, yes! I was remembering Fighter Bomber!
Another ‘Bunch o’ planes’ sim…

I never played fighter bomber, but CYAC was the first sim I spent serious time in that used polygons to render objects in the world rather than sprites.
As an aside I remember thinking that if CYAC had WWI biplanes and modern (at the time) jets it’d be pretty much perfect - I’ve since learned that a game called Dogfight existed, and is available on GoG. I should try it out…
And Birds of Prey is a classic. Loved that game ![]()
They were everywhere!!!
Ohhh, that was called Strike Aces here in the states. I missed it back in the day, but I’m looking forward to trying it for the podcast!
I still have my AoL emails. I created them when I used one of those AoL discs in the 1990’s.
As a matter of fact I just threw an old AoL disc away not that long ago. It was still in the shrink wrap.

I remember when GameStop was Electronics Boutique and had literally an entire wall dedicated to flight sims and sim gear.
This brought back a lot of memories.
Dang…that sure did. Amazing how your brain can lock into some deep dark corner (what an amazing SSD drive it is) memories that can be jogged by that video. Awesome. That music. The sound effects. The ASMR of the whole video.
Been a long time since I saw a 5-1/4 floppy disk. Most game patches now are bigger than what one of those could hold.

Those were the days.
We still have Electronics Boutique stores here. Branded as EB Games.
But they are devoted to consoles, collectables and apparel these days. You are lucky to find more than a small section of PC games and even then it is only the latest AAA offerings.

Most game patches are bigger than my first HDD - 150MB
Both are absolutely true.
If I am not mistaken the 5.25 ones had up to 512kB.
That was decent in a time when hard disks were around 30MB, but both that floppy and that hard disk would get you nowhere these days.
Yesterday I started Steam and within a few seconds it downloaded ~150MB of patches.
We truly live in the future.
Do boxed PC games even do anything any more? Or is it like the consoles and the disk just tells Steam that you bought the game and to go download it?
Quite often there isn’t even a disc inside the box. There is just a code. ![]()

Somewhat of an unpleasant surprise when I found that out after I bought Quick Books a couple of years ago.

Yes but it’s usually limited to special edition releases geared towards hardcore fans. I believe you can get a special collectors boxed editon of Stalker 2.
