I have always found the German use of the word “geil”… curious. In Dutch we use the same word, but it has a slightly… different meaning so to say. Ähnlich, but different. Our use of the word directly translates as “horny” and does not carry any of the connotations the Germans put with it such as “cool” or “hot”. In Dutch it’s a randy word. So. Affentittengeil(1), nah? 
(1) Affentittengeil translates to monkeytittyhot. Obermegahammeraffentittengeil translates to overmegahammermonkeytittyhot

My German wife hates the word Geil.
She says too it has a bad vibe, but she’s from Schleswig Holstein, so far up north that is probably different from other German states.

It also has the same meaning in German but I’d say it is more commonly used to generally express excitement for things. In that context it’s better translated as awesome or amazing than horny but yes, without any other context it does translate as horny lol

My first visit to Germany was an exercise near the Kiel Canal. Really enjoyed it. Gribbohm (my first Gasthof) and Holstermindorf villages. Very nice people.

This. The sexual connotation is still there.
However its main use has shifted from there and in most cases it just means cool/awesome.
I rarely say it. But in this case it is justified.

Times like this, I wish I knew more German than just the curses my Oma used to hurl at my Opa when he got in the way in the kitchen.
Oh man I’ve been on the ship (just as a ferry).
The Norwegians on the ship were…uhmmm… partying so hard you could think you were in Drammen if you know what I mean.
(The booze prices on board are outrageous from a German point of view, but pretty awesome by Norwegian standards).
