RoF used to have a hitbox between the pilot and the motor that was a guaranteed fatal fire. Some players had such crazy-good gunnery that they could hit it from 100 yards easily. For awhile the more populated online servers would have a half dozen streaming, smoking wrecks within a 2 mile bubble. Visually cool. Not very realistic.
I just hope that they donāt neuter the .50s, because right now they feel what I would expect.
Yeah, they are setting themselves up for a ammo comparison debate⦠But, it seems like they will be able to change each ammo category independently of eachother
Im not an expert, but I dont see how an AP/API round would make a smaller hole in the skin of an aircraft than ball ammunition. The jackets are the same size. The skin of the planes is not hardened steel, so Iām pretty sure the jackets of an AP round would tear through just as much as a ball.
What are you guys thoughts on this?
I wouldāve guessed itās because the AP ammo doesnāt deform as muchā¦?
I guess maybe an exit hole from tumbling, if they simulate that and ricochet inside, but they should impact the plane with the exact same size and shape.
I mean if you scrape the paint off the tips, you wouldnt be able to tell an AP from Ball round in .50.
The only ammo I have personal experience with is 7.62 and 9mm. The smaller caliber would often produce larger holes in the paper target because of its lower impact energy. Hitting the paper was enough to make it tumble before the round had passed through. Could this be an issue? Iām assuming AP rounds have larger mass and energyā¦?
And, deformation will start the moment the round touches the skin of the target, so I guess it could still be an issue Again, assuming they do deform differently.
There must be some cool vids on youtube about thisā¦! ![]()

Hello everybody,
The progress on many parts of the Battle of Normandy project is becoming more visible with each passing day. We have placed the order on the numerous ground vehicles that will be outsourced while the design document on the buildings for the new map will be finished soon. The list of the airfields and the map borders are final and the work on the map itself has begun in earnest. The list of the squadrons that will be recreated in the Battle of Normandy Career mode and its main scenario are prepared as well. Visual models of the three aircraft and the FM of the first one (P-47D-22) are in the works. Today we can show you the current state of the visual model of the second aircraft in development - C-47A transport plane which will be manned by AI. The famous WWII legend, it was the best known Allied transport plane. Built under license in many countries, its civilian versions are still in service now, in the early XXI century. This workhorse played a key role in the airborne operations of the Battle of Normandy.
I reeeeeally hope they make the C-47 flyable, one dayā¦
Itād be pretty easy to do ā the data is easy to find, modern restorations are commonplace and still flying, and it shares a lot in common with the DC-3. Iām going to guess that despite all that, thereās a question as to whether or not players would buy/play it.
I wonder how popular the Ju-52 is
In any case, I believe that a Dak would be more popular.
I donāt imagine itās hugely popular: itās slow, thereās only one gunner station, and it has limited direct combat utility. For a game like IL2, that doesnāt seem like a winning combination.
Fighters and bombers will always be more popular. But I really like transports and especially dropping paratroopers!
A flyable C-47 would be a day one purchase for me. ![]()

And me!
Does anyone want my 75% off code for IL2 Battles? Itād be a shame to let it expireā¦
same. I already own all of it.
