Is the Gazelle Worth Buying?

You dont like it so much Smokin, that it almost make me want to buy it just to see if it is realy so weak

Or, if you wouldnt mind what would you say about giving it away to me so I can try? Just asking.

If it is possible to give an airplane away please tell me the steps and she is yours!

But first, my problems with it:

  1. Static instability. Yes, helicopters require some added concentration in hover. But this one is unstable even in forward flight. It requires not just an input to move around an axis but also an opposite input to stop the movement. This isn’t normal, even in helicopters half that size. It flies a lot like my T-Rex and nothing like the helicopter stable enough the be the first civilian helicopter certified for single-pilot IFR.

  2. Trim. The cyclic trim is opposite the input. That’s easy enough to fix in the control settings but even once you do it isn’t really needed because static instability creates a situation where there never seems to be cyclic pressure against your input as speed or load changes. Force trim is also a problem. If you turn on the control indicator you will notice that the cyclic moves with force trim which is good, but even with full lateral force trim you can pull into a hover and remain skids level with no input. I’ve tried it with a FFB stick as well and there’s no difference.

  3. Weird low-skid-height hover behavior. There were complaints early on that ground effect wasn’t modeled. Well they’ve fixed that but in a way that seems scripted, almost predictable. In stable air, small helicopters don’t require constant collective input to reasonably maintain height. Yes, they will hunt a bit but not like the Gazelle. It feels as if it is attached to a rubber band that is in turn attached to the earth and between the two some dude is occasionally pushing and pulling the rubber band.

  4. It is faster in a tight turn than in level flight! That’s the “flying fiction” part. You want to go 10 KPH faster? Get really close to the ground and crank her into a 45 degree bank and sustain the turn. Isn’t that cool?! Now roll out of the turn but don’t apply any collective or cyclic pitch. In the world of Newton, you will launch into a climb. In Polychop’s world, you smack mother Earth.

Having said all that. If you can ignore the fiction, the Gazelle really is a blast to fly. It is nimble if not a little slow. And the interior modeling is some of the best in the game. If I sound a little angry or bitter, it is because I love what this little model could have been. It adds a lot to the game, especially on my server of choice, Blue Flag. But it is the Mario Kart of flight models. And that just doesn’t do it for me anymore. I held out because I was told by Polychop that they would address all of this by the end of 2017. They did do a big update in November but the improvement was marginal. I think the Gazelle is now as good as it will ever get. I will gladly give her away if doing so is possible!

Be careful what you wish because it can become reality

I mean I would like to try it. I realy do.
But I gave it another thought. And I am just so short of spare time that it will be imposible for me to give it serious examination these days.
So many things runing in paralel. First of all I need to finish (or even start) my DYI ruder pedals

Anyway I truly believe you about your findings. Just thinking if all that writen above can prevent one to somehow reasonably employ the choper. It is all subjective what is too much and whats not.

Btw to give away module you need to write to ED support and let them know that you want to transfer module from one user acount to another. They will manage the rest iirc.

Ok I’ll give it a go. What’s your account name at DCS?

313_Nevo

It is asking for your email address as well. (You can PM me if you wish).

Nevermind. They’re Russian. They probably already know your email address.

Hello,
I would like to transfer ownership of my Polychop Gazelle to 313_Nevo. I do not like the flight model and rarely fly it. He wants to try it before considering the purchase of any upcoming Polychop module. Thank you.
Sorry but I don’t have the user’s email address.

They shot us down!

Hello, Eric.

Sorry, we can bind only new not activated keys to another accounts.
Best regards and many happy landings !

Nevermind, thx anyway. At least we now know that modules can be given away only new.

Btw did you ask him WHY?

But as I mentioned, I have limited free time now. And as I am the RTFM guy it will take me lot of time to get her up in the air.

I am wondering how Beach can fly around 10 aircrafts in a single morning. I will be totaly distracted by the lack of knowledge of all the systems quickly changing around me in the various cockpits

It is kind of obvious why. 2/3s of the sim business is curiosity. If we could freely transfer ownership of a model, sales would take a hit. Ours is the perfect example. They’ve already made money off of me. They want your money as well. If I give you the model then both of us will have enjoyed the experience plus the campaign but the sale was made just once. That is why I phrased the request as if you wished to try the model as a precursor to buying any future Polychop products.

Your wording in that mesage was very good, no daubts.

Plus I think they are afraid of second hand market. But there is second hand market for almost everything, so why not DCS modules.

Or ED could introduce some Demo program, just like JustFlight.

I have never hated anything in DCS until I bought the Gazelle. I keep coming back to it after each update because it is such a superb visual model, especially in VR. I want it rise to the potential of the many thousands of hours put into it. I am happy to report EITHER some serious improvement in Beta 2.5.1, OR that I am easily swayed by placebo and hope. Although force trim and cyclic trim are still completely unnecessary in the model (releasing the stick yields no change in attitude regardless of change in speed), trim at least works properly and in the correct direction. The helicopter no longer gains 15 kph in a steep turn with no collective added. And it feels a little more natural in pitch. To me it is still lacks to sophistication of a DCS pfm level flight model but it is within the realm of “it might be right, it might not. I’ve never flown one” instead of “this thing is pure space-sim fantasy”. If this is the final state, I’m happy. (And glad I was forbidden by ED to give it away.)

Glad to hear you are enjoying it a bit more. I’m also glad that they put some extra work into the Flight Model. I found it to be plenty good enough if you flew it in a manner that fit the mission, ie sneaking along behind tree lines, buildings etc while trying to remain undetected. Yanking and banking seemed to be where the flight model had some issues.

I had a lot of fun with the Gazelle, but eventually I gravitated back to the Huey. I’ll have to fire up the Gazelle again and see how it feels now. Is the campaign working in DCS 2.5?

I don’t know about 2.5 although there don’t seem to be any significant complaints over at the DCS forum. However, the Viviane (TV) is broken with 2.5.1.

Hopefully that will get fixed in the next update then. That’s a rather important system for the Gazelle.

I thought I read something about them modeling a single eye IR image in VR
is that true and has anyone tried it?

Single eye IR image? Last time I tried the Harrier it only displayed the NVD in one eye
Is that what you’re talking about?
