Just like the gif, it’s not the original but it’s close enough that people get the reference
I see, you’re a man of subtly
Can someone give me a ‘back of the napkin’ explanation of what kind of tasks (sortie types) this thing does, other than RECON (I can do this but it will be ‘faked’). Or point me to a source. I want this in there (don’t own it yet) but don’t have a grip on how to task it.
Thanks
Un-regard, Google AI to the rescue:
The Bell OH-58 Kiowa is a family of military helicopters that have been used for a variety of missions, including:
- Observation: The original OH-58A was used to identify targets for other platforms, such as artillery and the Bell AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter.
- Scout: The Kiowa was used as a light observation and scout helicopter, performing low-level, low-speed visual reconnaissance missions.
- Direct fire support: The Kiowa was used to provide direct fire support.
- Bomb-damage assessment: The Kiowa was used to conduct bomb-damage assessment missions.
- Armed reconnaissance: The Kiowa Warrior was used to conduct armed reconnaissance missions.
- Security: The Kiowa Warrior was used for security missions.
- Target acquisition and designation: The Kiowa Warrior was used to acquire and designate targets.
- Command and control: The Kiowa Warrior was used for command and control missions.
- Light attack: The Kiowa Warrior was used for light attack missions.
- Defensive air combat: The Kiowa Warrior was used for defensive air combat missions.

(I cannot put the one wiht the caption you mentioned )
Actually I can…
EDIT: we need an official MH-60 so bad…
Yes!!!
Fight the power!
God bless Shughart and gordon
Amen to that.
Historically the MMS was to be able to loiter at the FEBA and spot for artillery, and later to be able to guide ATGMs from other platforms. I don’t think that being able to spot and shoot for AI Apaches is a thing currently.
With the plethora of red anti-air systems designed to be up front with maneuver elements, it would have been a challenging roll. Lots of light SAMs, a bunch of AAA some radar guided, and everyone else has an automatic weapon of some kind. Also having to deal with your own sides air defenses, artillery and air strikes, and every Joe’s itchy trigger finger.
Playing hide and seek along the treeline while send in spotting reports, or having to hold still to let that last hellfire guide while all the tracers head your way seems like it would be pretty intense. Not to mention the USSR was not above using artillery as an air defense option.
I’ve been working on a “stealth” type mission where on goes in low and slow to find the lead elements of the red battle position and the using knowledge of the usual order of battle for an assault decides which of the positions is the jumping off point for the assault. The call in a fire mission on it, and then perform BDA. Crappy weather with a dawn start, no weapons just sensors.
Drooooooool!!! ATM, the OH-6A is my favorite Helicopter. Can AH-6 take away its crown? Ta! Da! Daaaaa! Stay tuned for the next episode of @TeTeT, Tobson & @EightBall
Exciting Dayz
As far as visually ID’g an arbitrary target goes…
I know of a way - IF ED would provide one bit of functionality (I’ve chirped about this over the last few years). The functionality supplied that is related, but not complete kind of worked - one time. The first time I tried it. Then never again. Been 6+ months maybe I’ll try again.
Right now best I can do is: you fly over a group (not the best idea if it’s going to shoot you), input command, do a search, spit out a group name…yadda, yadda.
OTW, without clicking on the map and dropping a marker (there goes 'Immersion"). you’re reserved to dong some trigonometry, hoping to do what DCS already does (TDC over something, designate), or padlock by moving your head, look at it, and click a button/key.
With the above you would should get a GROUP name. Now you can have the AI target it! Or tell somebody about it, to some end. Tell your wingman to land there, of just drop a bomb there (on a house if this magical fxn returned nothing but the ground point intersection). Nirvana.
Who knows, maybe getting the tower not to say “Unable” on takeoff was a higher priority?
I am usually confused by what ED spends it’s dev time on, so no surprises here.
I’m assuming buddy lasing for munition fired by the AI is also a no go? I certainly haven’t been able to convince the AI to punch one off with me guiding it.
I haven’t tried it. I’ve heard is does not. Seems one of those things the [DCS] world would be announcing immediately.
Part of me, the cynical, grumpy part that just woke up and discovered I’m outta coffee, wonders if they just don’t ‘get it’. Or they are purposely avoiding something so useful and obvious (In this context) because they have ‘other plans’. Oh well.
At the begining of October i was not able to fly helicopters well at all. Forward flight was ok, but takeoffs and landings were a problem. Landings were just awkward and often frustrating.
I started dedicating time to the Little Bird in November. Its been only 5 weeks since i started flying it. I can now say that this mod has elevated my choppa game like nothing else could.
It is the equivalent of jumping into the deep end of the pool and learning to swim. However, its such a simple( systems wise) bird. You focus on the flying. I learned so much, so quickly.
The main thing is that OH-6 made flying the Huey and the Apache easier than ever. That right there makes this Mod GOLD. Since then i have flown the Ka-50(hate your trim lol) and the Kiowa was purchased. Im a lot better at the Ka and learning the Kiowa bit by bit. My Huey flying is more satisfying than it ever was. This is such fun!
Shout out! This is a great mod in its own right. I haven’t gotten bored w it. I dont think i will. Its just fun to fly. But its so much more than that. Thank you @TeTeT & @EightBall & Tobsen! Congratulations on your success.
Thanks, but it’s really Tobsen and EightBall’s work, I’m not that involved.
Thank you Tobsen. I completly ommited him in my post. Shame on me.
@Maico, if you hate the Ka50 trim (and who doesn’t?)c consider flying with the F/D on (noted by the two “=“ signs in the HUD. The flight director cancels the A/P channels except for some minor SAS and makes hand-flying much more pleasant.
Glad to hear that!
It was also my experience, after flying the loach for a few months I was surprised how much more precise I could be in the huey or the Mi-8. Both felt super heavy, though
