Getting IL-2 Pacific Fighters flashes…!
Loved running about in the Corsair and trying to find the carrier in the vast emptiness of the ocean.
I preferred the Hellcat, was a bit better handling around the deck.
When they added Hayrake to 1946 that became less of an issue.

Same here.
Hellcat is my favourite naval american WW2 plane.
Corsair is fine but Hellcat is just… great.
I was more at home in the Hellcat also but I have to say I always felt it was because I wasn’t good enough for the Corsair. She isn’t very forgiving from memory.
Loved Pacific Fighters…I was always hoping and wishing for a TBM Avenger.
IL-2 PF and MS CFS2 were pretty awesome games for WW2 carrier ops.
I remember them fondly.
IL2 PF was good, but I always felt
to be wayyy more immersive- with the amazing manual and the narrated intermissions…
Yeah they both had their strengths.
One of IL2 was that naval AI/mechanics were much better. In CFS2 ships sometimes did stuff like drive straight over islands.
(My face must have been priceless when I got shot down over some volcano island while searching for a ship, with said ship driving around in the middle of the mountains and ambushing me).
IL-2 ships could drive/steam through land masses too. The biggest culprit for that hilarity was NGen missions.
Really? Didn’t IL2 have that strange routing that sometines crashed the mission editor and the ships just stopped when they came near the coast?
I do remember them driving through each other though…
The Corsair had better high altitude performance but less agility, while at the same time had a much greater bomb load. The issue was more that around the boat, the Hellcat was easier to handle, owing to be lighter and more agile. It wasn’t quite as fast nor as powerful, but could maneuver with the Japanese planes quite well.
I think the corsair also had a bit of a visibility issue when landing on the carrier, with a long nose and relatively high wing loading.
Wasn’t it called Ensign Eliminator?
Vought had a few planes which had that moniker over the years.
@Franze and @schurem - perfectly summarised. Not really a combination for the patience of a teenager / young adult, haha!
The Hellcat’s nose was a lot easier to manage around - in particular when one didn’t have rudder pedals or head movement beyond hat snap views…and I hadn’t even heard of Boyd and his energy theories at that point so I was better off in a plane that could turn.
DGen used a template with the ships on it for their waypoint path. NGen wrote directly to the .mis file and it would allow ships to drive straight through land masses. I had a Guadalcanal campaign where the ship was routed through the island and it would disappear into the land mass and then come out the other side undamaged.
When you edited the ships waypoint path of those NGen generated missions using the FMB it would route the ship around the island/s.

Hellcat for me as well. Blame it on Graph Sims Hellcats Over the Pacific game on Mac. I didn’t have access to a PC, but was fairly spoiled with that title.
I was a PC user at the time (286 xt/PS2) and that game had me drooling for a Mac.
The graphic style was cool and the gameplay smooth!
