“Mosquito” Helicopter Build

Apache is good but for me the best chopper in DCS is, was and remains the Huey. Nothing beats its almost ww2 like pit, the shakiness and the whopwhop sound. I just love that thing to bits. I also love how it’s about the same size as my van

…And probably simpler to operate!

I’m partial to Tobsen and @EightBall 's OH-6A. Damn that thing is fun to fly! I feel like it can do anything but sling load and bring a bunch of your best friends along. There’s a Chinook for that.

I haven’t so much as wiped the dust off this project since July. Today though, I got a shipment! They parts are all the “shorts” from the phase 1 I brought home in the spring. Still…progress! Especially given that I was half expecting CFX to be forced out of business once the tariffs hit Canada (their primary supplier).

Adding a detail here for my own records. I scratched the paint badly in late spring while drilling. I only just around to the repair using a spray and clear coat by touchupdirect.com. It came out very close.

Not much to report. Now that the hangar is warm I can work. My resolution this year is to stop ignoring the Pitts. She’s my first love. And if I show up to compete, I need to show up good or stay home. Last year my 30 yo Terra radio started to fail. On a whim I put out and all-call to my soaring club to see if anyone had a European Becker radio to sell. Once Europe switched to 8.33 spacing their radios were being sold here for a song. Right away a guy called to say that he would give me his spare for a case of beer (“But NOT Budweiser!”). My good fortune continued when my hangar neighbor dropped by to offer a DB15/DB25 wiring test board that he had fabricated! ChatGPT has been helping me with the wiring but it is still a process. For now, the radio transmits but no audio.

I did do a little work on the Mosquito’s fuel system. The picture I have of that effort looks quite rough and I am a little embarrassed to share it.

Least he isn’t an idiot

I actually bought almost $200 worth of beer for the coolers on the outdoor deck that the ACA guys call “The Hilton”. I gave the radio donor, Robert, first pick. He passed on Stella for Sam Adams. So maybe a partial idiot?

Nothing wrong with Samual Adams, and perhaps he simply preferred an American craft lager over an institutionally owned Belgian. Both are legit, but these days one could argue that Samual Adams is more exclusive or premium than Anheuser-Busch InBev Stella.

Sorry, “Chimay or nay.”

There is nothing wrong with Sam Adams. This photo was taken at the bar of the Holiday Inn Rosslyn. Washington DC.

Pictured are two Americans, a Canadian, two Norwegians, a Dutchman and a Belgian. We drank the bar dry of Sam Adams… To be honest it was probably the Dutchman, the Canuck and myself that did the most damage. And boy did we feel it the next morning.

It was intended as a joke referencing what I thought was @Victork2’s fondness for Stella. (Or I’ve made that up from cold cloth). If forced to choose I would take SA over Stella.

The radio project turned out to be a lengthy education. My wiring wasn’t the best so I spent a week doing it all again. I also wired up a new antenna. Today I finally had the opportunity to test. I picked up Allentown’s ATIS clearly at 35NM and their Approach controller had me “5 by 5”! With that small victory i could then return to the Mosquito.

Trim, sanded and painted the border of the windscreen. Also cut out the fiberglass. With the paint dry I’ll mount with fasteners (instead of the factory’s pop-rivets) and she should start to look like a helicopter.

(Mostly) finished the windscreen. I’ll need to redrill the plexiglass for the larger diameter bumper washers. But no point doing that and placing fasteners until I get the controls in. Most of the time today was spent routing the fuel vent line. The job would be 20 minutes were it not for the small access holes. Even with the 90° attachment, it was extremely awkward getting the step drill flush with the fiberglass.
