MOZA AB-9, How to initiate your experience

Dan, I’m really liking it. It’s a beast though, and I think it was a good move for me to purchase the SimFab cockpit before I picked up the AB9…. A $600 solution for mounting a $500 stick base!

I still need to sit down and work on some MSFS profiles for it.

I’m hip. Helping some friends build a log cabin; deciding to do ALL the finish work on our house to save money (took it from bare drywall and plywood floors to ‘finished’) and I still stink at it. But, have a boat-load of tools!

Bought my wife a Kreg Jig at the start of the above. She’s building her own cabinets now. I built a ‘fancy’ door from a pile of wood and 4 hinges with it! That’s still functional after a decade! There are other options, and likely better/cheaper, but our needs were simple.

The AB-9 arrived yesterday, but the MT mounting plate and 100mm VPC extension are back ordered with no estimate of when they will be available. Fortified with a couple of cups of home-brewed Starbucks, I dug through 5 or 6 boxes of sim and 80/20 profile parts to come up with a solution.

It turns out that the original Warthog mounting plate for the Monster Tech desk mount fits pretty well on the AB9. In fact MOZA includes 4 x perfectly sized Allen head bolts for the Warthog mounting plate, including being pre treated with blue thread lock. I bolted the plate to an extended profile piece that I had bought to convert the desk mount for use with a VPC base and curved 200mm extension. That functioned fine on the AB9, but resulted in the grip being too high for my liking. On a tip from a user on the Moza Discord server, I ordered a 100x75 curved extension from qr4rigs.com made for the AB9. In the meantime I’d fly without an extension. To clear the vertical 80/20 piece, I had to slide it back a bit more than I would like, bit it seemed to be fairly steady. I’ll be able to move it forward when the curved extension arrives.

Legs for height reference.

I really hope you enjoy it Dan! I don’t think I could go back to a standard stick now.

We stepped into the pool and there is no turning back.
Congratulations @chipwich

Very much agree. I’ve got a lot to learn about tweaking it, but from what I’ve seen and felt, it is the way. The jury is still out on the MH16 Grip though. I’m not getting along very well with the light action switches, almost taking out @tempusmurphy with rockets on an attack run  It’s probably mostly due to my caveman hand dexterity, but the switches need longer throws IMHO. That’s a shame, because otherwise the build quality is superb.

I stuck with my old VirPil grip, with the intention of upgrading later, but I’m probably just going to stay with it until it wears out.

Sadly, I’ve unmounted the MH16 due to not being able to get comfortable with the buttons and mounted my TIANHANG F-16 grip. While I prefer the feel of the MH16’s metal construction over the printed feel of the TIANHANG grip, the latter’s high quality buttons give me much more confidence. Initially, I found them too stiff, but either they’ve worn in a bit or I’ve grown used to their feel. Also, the TIANHANG grip allows for some rotation for a nice offset.

For the Mossie, I began with the default Spitfire preset and basically just add about 20% spring effect to get the best feel so far. What about you gents? Adding any spring, or do you prefer no return to center?

New Cockpit software and AB9 firmware released today. Make sure to update Cockpit first. Highlights include support for IL-2 GB telemetry and only one hardware device will show up now.

OH MAN! Good one. Yessss

Great news. I was sure that with new firmware and moving to a single device in Windows was going to kill our DCS controller assignments.

Moza-goodness

It doesn’t. Took the Chinook out for a quick hop and it was happy. I was happy. No need to reconfigure, which I swear has taken at least one cat lifetime to do .

Bwahahahahaha. But on the serious side. Im am super excited. Had a busy night yesturday but its Friday and I will try the new software and play till my eyes bleed.

Ive also gone back to my TM grips. The initial statement I made about them being to heavy is now invalid. It feels a lot better and the buttons are not finicky as the MH-16. Go back to the drawing board MOZA…

I hate to post this, but it seems like the new AB9 firmware is causing some flakiness with certain grips. My TM Hornet grip reports buttons 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, & 26 continuously hot, which is strange due to it not having buttons higher than 19, not counting the POV hat. Similarly, my TIANHANG F-16 grip is showing random quickly firing adjacent buttons firing. Both test perfectly fine on my Virpil T50 CM2 base. Many users are now reporting similar behavior.

Fortunately, the good old (can’t kill this sumbeech) TM Warthog and the MOZA MH16 grips are not affected. I doubt that there is anyone who hasn’t updated there firmware yet, but if so, hold what you have until a new release has been tested. I spent two nights troubleshooting and almost threw my $350 (with shipping) TIANHANG grip in the trash in frustration. My rig was probably taking revenge because it has been running so well lately. Can’t have that, can we?

Hopefully something they can fix quickly - sounds like a sync rate problem (if the grip even has a clock? Not sure how they work exactly). Still, if it was good prior to the latest update then it’s almost certainly something they can fix if enough people make noise on their forum/discord about it.

@chipwich can you get the length and width of the top of the switch as i have indicated in the picture below? Also if you have the attachment that gives and extra 2 hats how wide is that?

Im looking to upgrade from my x56 and i just bought a moza racing wheel so Id like to keep everything the same so i only have 1 app.

Thanks

Hope this helps. MH16.

I’m not using the sidecar thingy, but it extends about 1 inch wide and is about 2 inches tall.

I believe that the software is different for their driving and flying lines. Driving is Pithouse and flying is Cockpit.

Awesome! Thank you. Thats what I needed.

Understand about the software. Still for some reason i like standardization. I think its a military thing or ADHD…
