Official 6th Annual Mudspike Christmas Flight 2020 - Discussion & AAR Thread

Just looking at the journey ahead a little bit - here’s the path ahead, roughly speaking (I made it to Singapore last night but haven’t written up the report yet):

6 flights or so, just under 7,000 NM, probably a bit over 7,000 NM by the time I plan the flights according the airways and approaches etc. I’m heading off in real life around the 25th so need to get to FACT (“we need to get to the facts!”) by then. I need to pick up the pace a bit.

So far I’ve covered just over 5,200 NM in 11 days, so as long as I don’t repeat the whole “hundreds of nautical miles the wrong way” thing, I should be okay with just a little bit of time compression.

We shall see what the weather is like when I actually get to take off again, but right now Bengaluru is actually okay for visual landings, which is slightly disappointing…maybe things will get a bit more exciting en route.

Excellent report PB. Love screen #5.

I am stuck somewhere in Ethiopia. Just cant decide on my next ride.
I missed all the sales and just cant seems to be any impressed by the things I own or available freeware things…

Having such fun reading this, I am thinking about getting ms fs2020 and doing the trip in the Kingair 350. I could make the New Years Day deadline. It looks like the aircraft I really want will be published next year. King Air 200 with Proline 21 avionics - I have all the manuals from Flight Safety.

Even the New Year’s Day deadline is arbitrary. The journey is over when you get there.
While MSFS2020 is still lacking in some areas, it is a great experience overall. I’m looking forward to reading your AAR’s !

We’re doing this! Finally. Let’s hope the ‘unparallelled fuel efficiency’ delivers.

I think we should be able to make it from this runway, but let’s not waste any of the 2074 metres, just in case.

And we’re off!

Expecting to land in the dark at Marsa Alam around 18:00 local time. I have until then to figure this A320neo out properly.

I don’t know how I did it, but after a lot of fighting with the AP controls, we are now steadily climbing, though not at the rate I set, nor the speed, but at least we’re not descending and not stalling. Happy for now, but if anyone has some good resources for how to get this plane to do what you want, that would be great! It really does have a mind of its own, and it seems the AP cannot be ‘simply turned off’.

Seems I was still in CLIMB mode. After I clicked the V/S button for level-off, I can now actually set the V/S and ALT controls of the AP.

And Africa is in sight!

I should have taken off earlier instead of destroying my sidestick. Looks like it’ll be dark by the time I’m over Giza

EDIT: just one more shot, going feet dry over Alexandria, catching the last sunlight while below me the street lights are turning on.

Adios Zinder, and hopefully adios to the sahara. I’m going to Cameroon!

Seems like the desert is about to end. Open water in view again. This should be Mali Niger or somesuch place. Something blew the F up some time ago on that rivers’ shore.

Volcanic activity or some seriously big rocks from space?

And as the land becomes greener, there’s also clouds again.

Lowering beneath cloud level for the last hundred miles into Cameroon. Some weather! Lush hills.

Mount Cameroon in the distance. Nearly there.

Voila, Douala!

On the downwind for a pinkie landing at FKKD. What a beautiful country!

Leaving behind Cairo and the Nile Delta, heading for the Red Sea

Slightly brightened picture I shot of one of the many nice snorkling places by the Red Sea. It is a weird coast with nothing but sea, sand, and a road with once every few tens of km a resort.

A bit high and fast on final. MSFS says I damaged the landing gear. I should’ve gone around and shouldn’t feel hurried because of a co-pilot waiting for me to start cooking together.

Just watching this video now. Very useful for a noob in MSFS’s A320neo, despite some small errors which are listed in the top comment. Stuff like the pulling/pushing of the AP knobs and where to find the APPR page in the FMS is what I was missing.

I arrived to Singapore (WSSS) from Bali a couple of days ago.

It was a fairly uneventful flight, but the practice focus was rolling in additional CIVA coordinates into the machine throughout the flight - I flew a full flight plan with about 20 waypoints provided by Simbrief, but of course the 9-waypoint memory of the CIVA INS meant that soon after flying the RNAV SID, I had to punch in another 9 waypoints and so on.

It was quite fun flying the various turns on the Singapore approach path to finally catch the ILS. I did catch the glideslope, but something was off on the AP so I flew the final manually according to the flight director.

Next step is my longest ocean crossing yet, from Singapore to Bengaluru in India.

With no prior experience of MS Flight sim I am now downloading 2020 with a view to joining in the trip and making it to Capetown by New Years Day. I was meant to be sitting in a Vulcan bomber trundling down the runway at Southend but …

While download is running the adventure will start outside ‘Aircraft Hall’

at RAF College Cranwell, the home of my LongEze. This is where all RAF Officers are trained, the College of Air Warfare, most of the Central Flying School, Military King Air’s,

This is in Lincolnshire (known as Bomber County from WW2). As well as the grave of John Gillespie Magee, the home of the inventor of the jet engine (the Allied version) and ScoopD Mansions there are over nine active or former airfields in this small section of the county, some going back to 1912. How many can you spot?

I will go and see how the download is going… I may be some time

10% so far. A night take off maybe.

Here you go @Freak. I’m using the A320Neo as well and use the guide from that link, you can download the pdf.

Let me know if you can’t see it and I’ll host the doc for you.

Time to go to Cameroon!

This leg was meant to be
FTTJ → LN → TJL → TJR → YD → FKKY
but a few of the navigation aids weren’t working, so I ended up flying most of it via GPS again.

The ground crew put me on a better parking spot to begin my flight.

Some bus was on the runway…

And here we go! Leaving N’Djamena.

Cameroon is a lot greener than the previous countries.
Areas of rain forest and agricultural areas dominate the parts of the landscape that are not mountains.
But there are still dry areas between them, especially here in the north.

Lagdo Reservoir and the city of Garoua, with its airport FKKR.

Next up was a mountainous area, which is part the Faro National Park near the border of Nigeria, a huge wildlife reserve.

I have no clue what causes those structures, but they look great.

That’s lake Mbakaou, another reservoir.

Descending. ATC sent me down to 4400ft which felt a bit low, but who am I to disagree?

The mighty Sanaga river.

A bit of weather. Light rain but nothing severe.

Field in sight!

The city of Yaoundé

On final. I had second thoughts about choosing that airstrip. Definitely was going to use the reversers.

I came in a bit fast and landed late, but managed to get her down safely. Without reversers I would have gone around and tried again though.

I am definitely the biggest fish in this pond right now. The parking area doesn’t seem to be made for my size.

That’s it for today.
Next time I am going to fly to Angola.

Leg 2: LFPG (Paris CDG) to LSZB (Bern)

Late afternoon departure from Paris

After the issues with the previous leg, I loaded my flight plan from Simbrief in MSFS2020. The departure SID was selected and could see this in the routing in game. Climbing out from Paris, the AP followed the correct path, an improvement over last time.

Climbing through the cloud over Paris. River Seine in view.

I did notice that the AP was following the path slightly to one side. I’m not sure if this is a recent bug, as previously the flight path was bang on.

Hitting another cloud layer. Just stunning.

ATC had me climb up to FL370, which took a fair bit of time, even on the CLIMB auto-throttle setting. I’m sure I used to get nagged, “please expedite your climb” but this seems to have gone in one of the recent patches, maybe?

On the way up to FL370

I was hoping to see Lake Geneva, no such luck.

As we descended into the murk on approach to Bern, the cloud took on a really orange hue from the setting sun, giving a very Martian feel.

On approach to Huygens Crater

Sunset over Bern

I noticed something wrong with the flight plan as there was no STAR selected. Quickly running through the MCDU menu’s, I couldn’t figure out how to enter this, or select the correct approach. Coupled with my TrackIR profile geared for combat flight, I couldn’t keep my head still enough to key things in.

ATC told me to turn to a specific heading and wait for vectors. Sadly these never arrived and I was starting to worry about the mountains that I know are around Bern.

Bern at night

Having seen the runway, I made a gentle turn and came nicely round onto a heading on runway 14. Something to note here, when the ATP is following in HDG mode, its about 5 degrees out. So if you want 140 degrees, need to set the HDG bug for 145.

Obviously its highly likely this could be my ignorance.

Touching down, I landed quite hard, but any landing… turning off the runway, I headed for the gates.

Weekend at Bern(ies)

I still need to sort out the loading of the SIMbrief flight plan. I checked this again and it doesn’t have the arrival runway and leaves it as “Direct” when loading into MSFS2020. If I change it, it removes the flight plan. More reading…

Next up, I’m not sure if it fly down Italy, or the dalmatian coast. Given that the weather has been awful, there hasn’t been much opportunity for sightseeing. I may do Rome, then on to Malta, before heading in to Africa.

One suggestion I have is to take a few minutes to save some preset views in MSFS. It’s quite handy to be able to hit a numpad key and have the view snap to the exact viewpoint you want to manipulate a panel.

I’ll typically pause trackir and then use the saved views to mess with stuff like the FMS. Honestly I don’t even find myself using TIR very much with MSFS, just because I don’t like having the cord hanging off my head.

My typical setup will be something like:

(Numpad keys)
1 - Takeoff/landing view, where I spend most of the time.
2 - Overhead Panel
3 - Upper overhead (if required)
4 - FMS
5 - Center Panel

…etc. Definitely makes moving around the panels a bit less painful.
