P-47 Thunderbolt

best part of that video is the high speed ground loop. Dude literally does a donut going about 80 knots, no damage. I don’t have the P47, does this work in DCS?

Here is V.2
I needed it off to the side. A 3/4 inch wood ball on a plastic knife thats been heavily massaged and painted. A piece of plastic rod reinforced the back.

Looks a bit more WW2.

V.1 was too close to my fingers. It doesn’t take much to make the slider so much more useful.

I wanted to say this skin by keefyboy P-47D-30 'Hun Hunter XVI' flown by Lt Col.Gilbert O. Wymond Jr, 65th Fighter Squadron.UPDATED
brought great joy to me. I also really enjoy his Hun Hunter skin. Get it at DCS.

There goes your tail! The Jug is such fun.

There is just no WW2 comunity online for this.

We ran some WWII for a while but have been back on a modern kick lately. Might spool up some WWII another weekend.

numbers aren’t really helped by having things split between beta and stable releases.

That was only just changed this past week in fact.

they did add it to the stable release? lol, they did! funny how I just skipped right over the first line of the update and went looking at the rest, guess it’s time to reinstall DCS

But point still remains, take a small community within a small community and then split it. I think some folks don’t always understand that not everyone wants to have two versions of DCS at all times, or even any time.

Yup: “Introduced new modules: DCS P-47D Thunderbolt and DCS The Channel map.”

https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/news/changelog/stable/2.5.6.52437/

Another reason is the map and asset situation. You have to buy the assets (kind of hard to have a ww2 server without them), the map they are running, and also a module. And all of this to have p51/spit/p47 vs 109/190D/190a in what ends up being a server with like 10 players on it…

Multiplayer WW2 is solidly in the hands of IL2 right now. So much more conducive to large multiplayer servers. If you’re interested, Combat Box and Wings of Liberty are two great servers with varied missions, both of them tend to stay in the 80 player range also. Now IL2 can also use SRS for radio comms as well. VR performance is outstanding, and the gunner stations (multi-crew) give you an experience you can’t get in any other game.

I fly the p51 in DCS as a novelty, but MP is kind of a cruel joke. I could go on but that damage model horse died years ago. I know its getting fixed, but its been two weeks like 3 years ago.

Throw in the AI problems and it’s hard to compete in the SP/Coop side of the house as well. A perfect storm of improperly balanced airframes, AI tank-like damage model, and AI UFO flight model, and you get some pretty frustrating gameplay. All at a very high upfront cost.

I do enjoy the P-47 in DCS, but that’s purely for the module itself. The game behind it is seriously lacking.

What did the P-47 historically do? Two things, right? At first they tried their best at high altitude bomber escort. Then the Mustangs took over that duty and they got to roll in the mud on anything that moved. Preferably trains, trucks, aircraft on the ground, POL stuff. Stuff to find and make go boom.
I grant you that the AI probably isn’t able to be programmed such by us, the users that it makes a good show of the first mission.
The second mission, I bet DCS can do that just fine. I find the AI fairly competent at that.

But I agree, dcs has least problems doing “day at the range” before the AI’s warts start showing. Would be nice if that were different.

I have no problem with the AI because typically I set a squad of 4 to High for leads and Good. for wingmen. For the last few days i have set them all to high. I survive most dogfights and land in various degrees of damage. Yeah, I get killed sometimes but I would not call the Ai impossible. I fly mostly 8 vs 8 or bomber escorts with 12 oponnets,12 bombers and 4 or 8 escorts. Any higher numbers ends up in a slide show.
Now let me flip the script. Jump into any of the “ready made” missions that come with DCS and the AI becomes super heroes. Flying campagins is impossible. That whole random setting… To me, it just destroys gameplay. IMO, the missions should have a Ai slider for missions. Not everyone is going to go into every mission and set up the Ai.
As of late, I have been thinking that here I have this great sim IL2. Its WW2, there are all the assests I need and a good comunity. Why dont I fly that and give up on DCS WW2?
My biggest beef with DCS WW2 is the lack of forsight from ED. They did so good to introduce the F-86 and MiG-15 close together. But the Mustang had no rival for a bit. The 109K is Uber (as it really was) compared to the P-47 and 51. The I-16… well… yeah… I like to do A2G with it but there is no opponent. Now we have the Corsair coming and I promise you that I will not put a Japanese skin on a 190 and pretend its a Zero. Sacrilidge!
I sincerly hope a worthy adversary will be a surpise that comes with the Corsair. Hint, not a A6M2. But I will be in my 70s by the time the Pacific is fleshed out in DCS.
Right now, the thing that DCS WW2 does well is model the aircraft at a level of detail noone else can. Some scenerios are easy to do but we are very limited. Sad but true.

I disagree.

I fly on Storm of War quite often… we can easily get 30+ players simultaneously. I often get online with a few friends, we make a 4-ship takeoff at Saint-Pierre-du-Mont and go bomb some targets in Thunderbolts. If we feel fancy, we sometimes grab Mustangs and go escort B-17 formations (rendez-vous points are available in the server briefing). If we feel more agressive, we grab Spitfires and try to lure Jerries over the ships near the beach, which makes for incredible dogfights.

Plenty of stuff to do if you fly with the right people. We also have human GCI at times which is quite useful.

From F2 where you have the info bar, the AI can pull vertical and drop to well under 100kts, even under 50kts and still have authority to pull “over the top” of a loop and back down, engine at full chatter. Super is right, you can’t get close to that as a player - especially with a merlin - it will overheat, billow smoke and seize before your nose drops. Sometimes, they just hang by the prop. They can also run the engine hard without consequences while we cannot - and that is besides the superpowers.

It seems the AI is scripted to not fall below a certain baseline energy state, but rather than actually fly properly they get a source of free energy or don’t suffer drag the same in turns or pulling up from a dive.

I do agree you can have some good fights too, but even then if they aren’t super heroes then more often they are unresponsive and let you cut their plane apart from behind.

I totally agree with the modeled fidelity aspect, I really enjoy running the warbirds through startup and adjusting my sights versus a more simplified play style.

More so own to join, but I get your point. Dedicated server doesn’t require licenses anymore.

As an owner of the asset pack, I would gladly accept ED rolling it in to the core and it no longer being a paid add-on and hence, paywall even if that means I call it a “loss”. Heck, for the price that it was ($20 I think?) I’ll pay again if that would make them bundle it into the core and stop charging for it.

Chuck_Owl,
How is it that you seem to solve all my problems? Ok listen, So I got this younger girlfriend and she… Hahahaha…
On the more serious tip, Thank You! I am just dying to get mixed up with real people in DCS WW2. Ill look up SOW and see if its my cup o’ tea. Might be just what the Doctor… Owl ordered.

I do go on SOW in the FW-190A8 sometimes and do get into some interesting scrapes although flying that thing is like punching yourself in the face for the most part - laughably a million miles from a Zero one would think.

No secret the AI is worryingly poor in the game regarding how it behaves in BFM and needs a total rework.

Also the Human GCI maybe a bit to good for WW2 but nice to have. Issue there is that 99.9% don’t want to play Human GCI so there is rarely anyone doing this - another thing that needs a total revamp from scratch is the in game AWACS/GCI - despairingly poor.

Let me know if you ever want to wing up. I’ll be your wingman any time.
