Luna, 3 years next month. Amstaff/labrador-mix lounging on “her” couch. She’s kind, snuggly, adorable and weird. And quite allergic it turns out; just started her lifelong vaccination. Hopefully it will be effective, else they recommend her being put down ![]()
She’s adorable. Fingers crossed the vaccination is a success. What is it she is allergic to?
Grass(timothy), mites(dust mites mainly) and the yeast fungus that occurs naturally in their ears. The allergies cause inflammation in her ears/ear canal, which in turn makes the fungus go out of control and they then causes the cycle to repeat.
The vaccine takes proper effect in about a year, so more injections at home and lots of salves and such in the meantime.
I have a dog, Freckles, who has suffered from allergies like that all her life. Unfortunately the customized allergy vaccines didn’t work for her. It’s been a constant (and costly) battle, but she has had a good life. She is 13 now.
That sucks. But if she’s happy and not suffering, that’s good enough ![]()
But yeah, without insurance it would’ve cost me like 1500€ already. Still not cheap, but at least I don’t have to sell my kidney
The vet bills can certainly mount up fast. I hope that the vaccination works well for Luna. I think that for Freckles, she was allergic to so many different things that it was a non-starter.
Apoquel has helped, as well as over the counter Zyrtec (Cetirizine Hydrochloride).
Uhhhh pics or it didn’t happen? ![]()
Here she is, completely ignoring the Roomba vacuum cleaner.
Unfortunately she has some other ailments and we are pretty much just keeping her comfortable. She still has good days though, so it’s not quite time yet.
Our 10 year old Boxer takes 1 pill a day for allergies.
If we miss a day his ears get bad.
As long as we give him his pill he is good and happy. Of course i think he just likes the chesse the pill is wrapped in.
Good to see that he has his priorities straight ![]()
Reminds me of that old joke - ‘You think dogs can’t count. Try putting three treats in your pocket and only giving them two’
Did you see the one on TV, must be quite a few years back now, where they had a dog in a room (I think it was a border collie) and they had something like 40 toys (again, my memory lacking) in a different room and they told the dog to fetch each toy by name and it got every one right.
Quite amazing.
*edit - just found the story - it was 52 toys!
Not in a different room in this video - must be a different one
Border Collies are amazing.
Some can even count (up to five IIRC).
Supposedly they are the smartest of all breeds. Either way dogs’ intelligence is quite underestimated imo
We had a border collie x black labrador and she picked things up amazingly quickly. I only had to tell her once not to bark when she ran out into the garden, and she never did it again. Amazing.
She would hide the ball when she knew it was time to go home after a walk, as well. Or “accidentally” nudge it over the edge into the smelly drainage ditches which she loved splashing through, but wasn’t allowed to.
A real character.
Had a Doberman ■■■■■ as well, and she was also very smart.
On the other side, the dumbest dog we’ve had was a GSD based lurcher. Really, really dopey - but a lovely boy, nonetheless.
Although technically not a pet…our newest non-human edition to our family:
“Brenda”, a Nordlandshest born late last month to “Irpa” …the big brown one in the photos.
Mother / Mare and daughter / foal doing well.
So for those keeping score at home, the Hangar200 household now includes eight felines two equines and two ■■■■ sapiens.
[Edit}. Really? the word spelled “h o m o” triggers a dirty word black out?? It’s the name of the human species for gosh sakes.
That’s a cute foal!
Side note: Humans are so bad, they get censored. ![]()
