So sad @Magnum50. What a sweet face.

He was lucky to live his life where every dog hopes to be, at the side of their favorite human.

Sleep well, Apollo.

Thanks all… no kidding, it’s been a great year for me in so many ways. Retirement life… but damn, no kidding. Lost my mother-in-law 10 months ago, then lost Apollo before T-day, then last week lost my father-in-law, and 30 mins after receiving that news I got the call my best hometown friend dropped from a heart attack… what the hell. Anyone 2024 can only get better. I’m optimistic. lol

Hang in there Bud. As you say, it can only get better from here.

And that is a really touching memorial for Apollo.

It’s Bertils birthday today!
He got a cake of bread, paté and raw meat dogfood. Had to help him blow out the candle.
He got a new Lama plush toy that he dragged into bed, immediately.
Bertil has been with us since early March and made his place in this family. I can’t explain it, but i feel that he was meant for us and we for him.

Happy Birthday, little buddy!

@Magnum50 What a crap year! I hope the next is better.

What a wonderful tribute to Apollo.

@Troll My best to Bertil! He looks like a sweet pup!

Mine are getting older. I try to appreciate them as much and as often as I can.

Seems like 2023 has been rough on everybody. When my ex moved out two of the birds were hers so it’s just me and Albert, but the shortened daylight hours and me being gone at work all day everyday seems to be socially affecting him so I’m thinking about getting another bird so he has a flock-mate.

Please do it ASAP. They are social creatures and need the companionship.

With Budgies I don’t really think it matters if you pair him with another male or a female, the dynamics will be slightly different (more mutual grooming with a male/female pair). Either way, an intial squabble is to be expected but any serious or long term agression would be very unusual.

You just have to remember that you are also part of the flock in their minds.

Birds are smart.

I’m thinking male; we had a female among my ex’s flock but the egg-laying behavior and tendency to chew up more things than the males do was a bit too much for me to deal with unless I had a work-from-home job.

Picked up this guy (or girl, can’t tell yet but my gut says boy) last night. He still hasn’t adjusted to his new environment but he and Albert chirp back and forth on occasion and he’s eating well. Albert has calmed down significantly compared to earlier this week all alone. He was stressed and slimmed up in the last photo but poofy and relaxed now.

I’ve got an avian vet just down the street so I can get him checked out for any bugs from the pet shop. For a name I think I’ll go with Reiner to keep with Albert’s German theme–though I named Albert because his coloration reminded me of the Blue Angels :joy:

Well done, congratulations and thank you.

And if he does turn out to be a she. Victoria would also be in keeping with the German theme

Congrats on your new friend! Great to see Albert enjoying the company!

If you are a fan of Einstein and want to stick with physicists, I have a list for you.

Many suggestions that you may not even like, but once I had the idea, I just had to scroll through all the wikipedia.

German physicists:

  • Werner Heisenberg (of the uncertainty principle) or Von Braun (of the rockets)
  • Max Born (quantum mechanics)
  • Carl Friedrich Gauss (electromagnetism)
  • Johannes Kepler (planetary orbits)
  • Georg Ohm (electrical resistance)

Famous female scientists from the time of Albert Einstein:

  • Amalie Emmy Noether (German, basically discovered all of the mathematics that modern theoretical and particle physics is built on, she should be more well known)
  • Lise Meitner (Austrian, discovered nuclear fission)
  • Maria Salomea Skłodowska-Curie (Polish, naturalised French, lots of physics and chemistry, most known for her work on radioactivity)
