So, our intrepid leader, @BeachAV8R (for those of you who don’t know him) put forth a question in the PointCtrl thread that made me re-evaluate my SimBox lighting solution. TL;DR my Rift S depends on cameras to orient itself. Cameras that have a problem seeing in the dark. My PointCtrls don’t like to be disturbed by IR sources, so I installed LED strips. The ones I got were pretty bright white ones. They were cheap.
I went looking for LED RGB strips that would fit inside the 3030 frame of the SimBox sides and that had a mode memory, so I didn’t have to set it up every time I shut off the power.
This should allow for the VR headset cameras to find their way in the world…without having my eyes burnt to a crisp when I take off my headset, in the otherwise dark room…!
I went with a subdued green light as it makes everything glow cockpit greenish.
Now, the LED strip had a white control box with a power in port, a power out and IR receiver bulb cables.
Not aviationish at all!
I needed a project for my new 3D printer and this was the result. Yes, I used filler and alu paint to get this finish. But now the IR bulb is inside the box and the cables have braiding on them.
