Ah the prices I’ve found are already quite cheap, especially compared to the many advantages over a normal extruded rectangular profile.
How have you done the joints? The 20x20 sections support a single M6 bolt on the end that goes into the central core of the tube. I am not sure that is strong enough in all situations, though if I would only use those to catch side loading then it ought to be fine.
Perhaps I am musing out aloud now but I find these sections very pleasing to watch.
No, I lied. It’s not a real MB lock…
It’s a cheapo chinese car seat harness that I got on ebay.
It works great, but it was all chrome and shine and didn’t look like it belonged in an aircraft at all.
So, I did what I always do. I took it apart and sanded off all that chrome, buffed it with scotchbrite to get that dull sheen in the metal, and then I made a lid in my 3D printer.
This is not a hollow promise. I go into Martin Baker at Chalgrove fairly frequently. I will see what I can scrounge. They are very nice in there. But they won’t let me sit in the damn Meteor.
Unsafe is a relative term. Is it unsafe compared to picking up a kitten? Yes, as the risk of tiny kitten scratches is far less injurous than the risk of a herniated back. But a herniated back is far less of an injury than being dispersed at the molecular level as your jet hits the loving embrace of mother earth at 750 knots.
So: unsafe for Gits & Shiggles, very safe for operating high performance millitary aircraft.
All jokes aside, we all know what an irritant I can be when I’m excited about something so those guys need praise for not shoving me in a seat and firing me off over the hedge just for some peace.
‘rode’ an ejection trainer once (early 80’s), for training (my first T-38 flight); big hangar, large blue rails (Air Force blue) and a nasty seat (well worn).
They said is was some fraction of the G’s you’d get from the real deal. Half, I think?
Well, my takeaway was: it was jarring enough that it might make some people hesitate should the real need arise…or maybe not.
Actually, the worst part of all my rides was the helmet and, especially, the O2 mask now that I think back on it.
Thats really interesting. I’ve never considered that before. I wonder if that has actually ever happened. Not that we could ever know of course but its an interesting thought exercise
Anytime, ITAR usually applies to any bit that gets bolted on a fighter jet and even parts that don’t. It’s ridiculously wide but then again you can find a lot of parts online too that you can get without repercussions so… be careful!
Maybe we should drop that deal on the Tornado, @Victork2…
But seriously, we’ve seen what can happen because of a fighter manual…
Better not do something stupid.
