Spring 2021 DCS Fly-In

Thank you very much for setting it all up for us and being on hand with great advice and a really fun atmosphere. I had a blast doing a bit of harrier ground pounding with @nevo and @chipwich

Same here. My weekend was just full already.

I watched the track last night and grabbed a few more screens. LOL, at one point, there was so much ordinance in the air simultaneously that it was hard to discern who was shooting who.

This is about half of the ones worth posting IMHO. Enjoy.

In chronological order. If I get your callsign wrong, apologies. Let me know and I will correct the image comments.

@Freak pressing the attack with one burning and one turning.

@sobek

@Wes and Chipwich launching from the Teddy.

@MBot and @miRage follow.

Thats @Derbysieger in A10C.

I guess I am the one A10 without label shooting ‘GREEN’ Mavericks.

Just few minutes earlier: hey ground crew, pls load me some of the ‘BLACK’ bombs, ‘GREEN’ Mavericks plus two of that ‘WHITE’ pointy things

Plus … it was great Fly-In.
I really enjoyed again some coordinated flying with multiple participants.
Long gone are the Warbirds times where I enjoyed coordinated attacks on airfields with up to 10-12 planes involved in one attack.

These days my online fun is limited to two-ship once a week in IL2 BOX. Still fun but its great to join bigger group from time to time.

Thanks to you who participated in the organization of this Fly-In and also thanks to you who participated in the execution

Awesome…great looking event. I was sadly in a combination of work/article deadlines :frowning: I’m so sorry to have missed it. Looks like a great time was had by all…!

That’s me refueling while MBot is nuturing his wounded Tomcat to mother.

Great shots  , @chipwich !

We also used to have rather large events in classic IL-2 on the scales of 20 v 20 PvP. How I miss those days…

That was me in the Harrier. The other screen shots have been claimed. One way to tell for sure if an airplane isn’t mine is if it is successfully conducting air to air refueling! (Ironic since I am a fuels design engineer on KC-46)

I think the Harrier is one of the most difficult to air-to-air refuel…it is a bit better in VR, but still quite difficult.

Yeah, I have started to practice in the A-4 with it’s insane roll rate so that the Harrier will feel smooth in comparison.

I always have fun at the fly ins. Its a combination of great people and catching up with friends and a great mission set that caters for everyone. Even neanderthals like me. I love it

Same here! Thanks to the host and mission designer, these were some very fun evenings, even with zero preparation from my part. And that is not easy in DCS.

Enjoyed it a lot, especially good to finally talk to some of the familiar nicknames!

See I find the harrier very easy (except when people are watching me behind an S3!!) Because the basket goes over my shoulder and is out of sight. This makes holding a fixed reference point on the tanker much simpler for me.
I find the Tomcat to be borderline impossible, although I’m looking forward to trying it with my new throttle as the smooth action has got to make it easier for tiny correction.

The online group that I fly with has between 8 and 12 members flying Great Battles two nights a week. The server is in California but we have one member connecting all the way in Australia.

Times we fly are Friday (5-8 pm Pacific time) and Sunday (4-7 pm Pacific).

Guest pilots are welcome so if you or anyone else is interested just let me know. :sunglasses:

For DCS WWII I am really digging the SoW Server. There’s always people online and if you’re using SRS it’s easy to get some teamwork going

Thanks! We’ll aim to do another one in the summer perhaps.

This is our caveat - we can jump the mission coordination up a few notches but that takes away from the social aspect. Although we could try making more rigidly setup missions with specific objectives that run a bit shorter and then have breaks in-between!

For example, using SRS would take away much of the two/three conversations all at once and colliding - but take away the sort of water-cooler chit-chat. So maybe the above idea will work a bit better.

We’re glad to see these scenarios so well received. They are some of are “perpetual run” scenarios that we just leave up throughout the week. They are designed to have a moderate player count, and not be too specific in what you have to do.

But isn’t the advantage of SRS that you have the option of tuning into “guard” to chat with everybody and, e.g., tune your second radio to your flight frequency so you don’t step on everybody with chatter that concerns only your flight, e.g. speed/altitude checks, maneuver announcements, etc.

I really like the idea of using dedicated channels (SRS), but I also understand the necessity of keeping the discord channel available to simplify connectivity for new players. Would it be possible or viable to use both? I also like that the discord overlay displays who is speaking, which speeds mental recognition with voice to callsign. If memory servers, SRS has something similar. Having both overlays would clutter the screen, so would disable the discord overlay in that case.

On a somewhat related note, whenever I attempt to use VoiceAttck (VA) with discord, my buttons assigned to various VA channels turn into momentaries instead of PTT. In other words, when I press a button assigned to VA, the transmit lights momentarily, then stops. It’s like discord is capturing voice input assigned to control buttons and squelching them. Not a problem with VA+SRS. Anyone else using VA notice this?
