The 5 stages of hardware loss

It must have gotten stuck somewhere (I guess) around the CMS switch.
It very simply gave a clean pull, as I got up, with an angle bottom left-top right momentum and it snapped.

Checking the thing is made of waht looks like Die Cast Aluminum. It’s very lightweight, somewhat thinner where it snapped and it’s actually the place where all the force is focused.

What’s sad is that it wasn’t even such a strong pull as the headset just barely fell off my head so it MUST have been cracked before.

I have it since December 2010 so I guess metal fatigue is real.

I’d strongly suggest that everyone who has a Warthog give a crack inspection to that piece.

@dachsdk, yes- it’s exactly that- I was even considering getting a 3D printed steel part but buy+shipping fees are quite a killer. That on top of something that will be much stronger than the rest of the joystick.

I’m always a bit worried about that.

Maybe plastic IS a choice after all- being a bit less hard it wouldn’t crack- but become less resistant on the long run. The price is good though.

Will contact Debolestis to see what he thinks.

Thank you all!

The ‘strong & flexible’ plastic that shapeways uses is very strong & flexible
I have used in all my latest controller projects…

I was actually thinking that it really looks like a great idea.

Beside that If I was to put some extra material on top of the locking ring I can distribute the stress on it instead of having it all on the pipe.

Dunno if I make any sense…

Something like this. I honestly believe it would help also current Warthog users that had no catastrophic failure of the stick so far!

How bad are import taxes with Shapeways?

That could work.
Import charges will vary with different countries, I guess. Check if you have a printer facility in italy. I could make a 3D model for you. Could also integrate that additional support into the model…

Come to think of it, both Italy and the Netherlands are in the EU… So no taxes.

Contacted Debolestis who confermed the same thing. Sorry for the bother.
This tragedy is getting smaller and smaller by the minute!
