The future evolution of Flight Simming.

I love the graphics also, but you know…
This will not help in any way to any flight sim.
I mean the graphics is just smaller part of the whole cake. I was thinking about this somewhere in the past already

Lets imagine that we will use for the our filght sim graphic engine from A-10 Cuba! Google it, it has great flight model, damage model, etc. With the old graphic engine we will be able to put hundreds of the units on the screen…

But then it comes to the parts of the sim which are problematic even for today sims :

  • need to program AI
  • need to program ATC
  • need to program misiles and smart weapons
  • need to program weather engine
  • need to program dynamic campaign
  • need to program …

And in the end we will realize that the legacy graphics will not cut it. Because the other sims has at least the graphics

Yep, perfectly valid, although there is at least some breathing room to be gained in terms of graphics and terrain detail. For example, I have tested the daylights out of unit counts and can get about three times the number of units into a Nevada mission than I can a Normandy mission with the same relative performance. This only applies to a specific case in DCS though, and you are right, the other stuff going on under the hood drives the scope of the experience. Some of that would have to go too, and there is the rub:

Exactly! I guess on reflection, it is not a traditional flight sim that I think would benefit from the approach those guys are taking with that wargame. The products that have survived like DCS and X-plane have survived for a reason. Competing products that have backed off in terms of detail, even with the best of intentions, have not fared well.

Still, I would love to see a completely different approach to simulation that backs out one notch in scope. Instead of staying at the tactical level and referencing Shaw’s ‘Fighter Combat, Tactics and Maneuvering’ , I would love to go to the operational level and reference something like this:

‘Command’ already does this to some extent but I want it in 3D. That is all I was really getting at.
