BTW, I HIGHLY recommend this series of campaigns to learn the Hornet:
Just don’t forget to also arm the radar altimeter.

My god, look at all of the HOTAS!
Nice setup Maico.
After 7 years of hard use my Virpil warbrd base has picked up a glitch … when moving the sitck the led lights will intermittently go out and there is a blip in the signal from the stick… did a bit of google magic and it looks like the din cable that connects the stick to the base can fatigue, have just opened a support ticket with virpil and will see what happens
Best of luck
When making my Viggen stick grip I have had many opportunities to curse Thrustmaster for starting to use the Mini DIN 5 connector…
I had a similar issue with my warthog stick a few years ago. One of the wires had come loose from the connector in the base.
I am nowhere near good enough to solder a connector and wires that small, but I did manage to fix it with some conductive glue:
Once that had set I sealed the whole lot with a liberal blob from a hot glue gun to hold it all together.
I HIGHLY THANK YOU. This has been the best of weekends. I got the Startup down pat. I got Mavs and dumb rockets on target and did a little DF. Once I got the whole Aim 7 thing and the HMD, it was cake.
Gunthrek is good. Wow. I am ready to do some more. I spent a few hours having fun with them.
All in all a great Bug Weekend.
I have the identical throttles. An Orion 2 base with F-15EX throttle and an Orion 1 base where I swap between my Hornet grip and a Viper grip depending on whether I’m flying the Viper or the Hornet!
I also use the Viper grip for all the single engine planes like the Viggen, Harrier, and MiG-21.
I only use the Hornet grip for the Hornet, every other twin engined bird gets the EX/2 combo, even the helos! If the 15EX had come out first, I likely would have skipped the Hornet throttle altogether, the 15EX is basically that one with more controls and only a couple that would be “wrong.”
I also have both an Orion 1/Hornet grip stick and an Orion 2/16EX grip stick that I switch between depending on what I’m flying that night.
I use the 2/EX throttle and 1/Hornet stick for Il-2, though. Unlike DCS it doesn’t support the mapping across device swaps so I found that combo was best universally.
LORD JEZZUS HAVE MERCY! He speaketh the THRUTH. However, the Navy '18 Stick I use for the A-4, F15s and -18. I also bought the WW Ka-50 grip and base. This works for the Huey, OH-6 and just about every other Helo I fly.
I like your style @JediMaster …
Oh I use the Hornet stick grip for many other planes too! Harrier, Eagle, Tomcat, and pretty much anything older than them.
The 16EX stick I use for the A-10C and both Ka-50 and AH-64 helos (I didn’t get the WW Ka-50 as I don’t fly it enough to spend for that too), but that really may be it. Oh, the MiG-15/21 as the analog paddle axis works with the brakes better.
I just only use the Hornet throttle on the Hornet. Even the older F-4E and Tomcat get the 15EX throttle.
This is mainly for ease of use. The 15EX stays on the 2 base. The 1 base has the Viper grip and gets swapped with the Hornet when I use it, so by ONLY using it for the Hornet I minimize how often I swap grips! Viper/1 base for single engined birds, EX/2 base for twin jets and helos. It’s too painful to swap the EX grip for the Hornet on the 2 base.
Oh, I don’t use the gantry on the left of the base for the Viper grip either. The 1 base has the detents so I don’t need that finger guillotine mounted there for those spots and it makes it faster to swipe to the Hornet grip without that in the way or requiring removal. Since the 2 base has the alternate detent design I would need it, so it stays exclusive to the 1.
Well… update on the Warbrd base … i opened aticket with virpil on sunday afternoon
we had a couple of messages back and forth, final result is we diagnosed the din cable and today i got the invoice for a replacement part… was a bit steep in shipping
cable was 9.95euros and shipping is 19.95 euros
so now waiting for it to arrive
I really cant complain about virpils customer care… 4 days from opening ticket to dispatching replacement part
But 30 euros to get a cable… Com’on Virpil!!! Get off this proprietary crap.
Glad you got sorted. But Virpil needs to do better.
Can u please explain?
Whoooaaaa! You got some very valuable information. I didnt know i could do without that.
Good stuff!
So, now that I’ve got my VR situation sorted more or less, I am starting to think about a force feedback stick some more.
As far as I can tell, there are three options: Moza, VPForce and FFBeast. Moza is cheapest, is a factory built unit that comes in a box and is the most ‘clean’ solution, or so it seems. It is by far the easiest to get, and probably has the best support in case an RMA is needed.
VPForce is a bit more boutique, it has a waiting list but the software is said to be very good. It is also rather more expensive than the Moza. On specs it should not differ all that much from the Moza.
Most expensive is the FFBeast, that is, if you do not build it yourself. I have an offer from a guy in Ukraine who sells built units. It is (on spec) the most powerful of the three. I have no idea about its software support.
Now, I got an email from VPforce that I can put in my order. But I also have that offer from FFBeast. (I prefer either stick to the Moza tbh) Which one should I choose?
My opinion is get Moza. They will be around since they do car stuff. Skip the MH-16 and stay w the TM A-10 grip and get a TM F-18 grip if you want to spend more coin. And thats my two coins, er cents.
Maybe I missed it earlier in this thread, but Winwing were showing some FFB stuff today at the FSweekend in Lelystad.
It was very busy so couldn’t really get the ins and outs, but they had a ffb stick base as well as a pedestal working. (I think prototypes).
Perhaps something to add to the list of options to consider.
I find myself gravitating towards FFBeast. Reading this for example, puts it ahead in my book, especially since I’m not the pasty white office guy type, but more of the axe-slinging judoka type, so a few extra pounds of force sure sound enjoyable.
Of course a wait and see would be best, it always is when it comes to buying hardware. The WinWing thing might be cheap and well made, and the VirPil item is most certain to be very well made.
There’s also the fact that if I were to get the FFBeast, I’d be paying an Ukrainian-speaking dude. For me, that’s a plus.
I’m really happy with my Moza AB9, but I’ve never tried the other two. When you flip the starter switch on the OH-6 and the stick begins a gentle rock that progressively gets quicker, until it settles into a mild buzz, you know that you are in for a treat. But @Maico is right. Skip the grip and use your favorite from another manufacturer
