I found the settings in ”AMD Overclock” or something like that. There is a ”PBO Limits” setting that you can change to ”Motherboard”, which I did…
Had to look around the BIOS before I found it.
Cool thanks. I’m going to look for that setting tonight when I get home from work.
Based on that performance chart I have my eye on the 5800X now. The price/performance point looks good and my favorite computer store has them in stock. Probably pick it up on my way home.
I couldn’t find anything related to PBO or overclocks on that page, but upon reading one of their reviews of a Ryzen CPU, it seems very likely.
They describe the setting that our BIOS calls PBO motherboard as “PBO enabled”.
Picked up the 5800X on the way home … I noticed it’s not using my old unsupported 3466 RAM as well as it used to (maybe because of the Zen 3 architecture) but I’m still happy …
I checked and mine was set to PBO Advanced → Motherboard. I tried changing Advanced to Enabled and it wouldn’t post. Went back into BIOS and set it to Advanced → Motherboard, and it still wouldn’t post…!
I had to set it to PBO Disabled to get it to run.
I did. But then I had to check if there was a “PBO Enabled” setting, and that was in the same drop down menu as Advanced, so I tried that, but it wouldn’t start. And then I tried setting it back to Advanced and Motherboard, but with the same result…
I let the PC sit for an hour and went back at it just now, and now I could set it to Advanced and Motherboard, again.
Nothing special. Just open HWmonitor or another app that records max frequency and start a game. The CPU should spike to its maximum frequency on one or two cores. Should be 4.8GHz-4.95GHz for the average 5900X, some can even hit 5GHz
Perhaps, if you don’t mind tinkering , now would be a good time to check the stability of the setup with some stress tests.
I recommend Cinebench and prime95 small FFTs.
It sounds like the setup may not be stable with these settings, or magic and cosmic rays is causing this.
It may be too much work of a kind you don’t like, but better to figure out during a stress test than while flying.
Or just undo the “overclock” if you encounter issues
