British designs are purposeful, but always has got that special…thing.
Imagine being a fly on the wall of the design board meeting room when they made some of the decisions that led to the Lightning, for instance…
SAAB were heavily influenced by British design philosophy, never being held back by what was considered conventional engineering.
A sort of ”anything goes” attitude. Come up with the crazy ideas and then let’s sort them out and see what will fly.
Yes, but ‘let’s make it fit’ without a spare thought for the poor buggers who have to work on them.
Admittedly, my experience is limited to British bikes and cars (Triumph, Norton, Jaguar and Rover). But RAAF aircraft maintainers I know loved working on American (e.g. F-18, F-111) and hated working on Hawks.
