WiFi or CAT cable?

First world problem but it’s kinda sad how poorly regular WiFi operates in 2020. It’s almost like trying to deal with a paranormal entity LOL!

I worked about 18 months in the cable companies’ callcenter. Wifi. Nope. Not if you care for speed, reliability and that sort of thing.

Almost every client lived in a dense urban conglomeration. All those little routers, fighting over the same ten channels. All interfering and the clients being promised over 100megabitses! which are categorically impossible on 2.4ghz and that’s even without the guy on number 4 who has a broken microwave oven.

Fork WiFi and the horse it rode in on.

Thank you for your interest in Starlink!

Starlink is designed to deliver high speed broadband internet to locations where access has been unreliable, expensive, or completely unavailable.

If you provided us with your address, you will be notified via email if beta testing opportunities become available in your area. In the meantime, we will continue to share with you updates about general service availability and upcoming Starlink launches.

I heard it‘s 400$ once and then 100$ per month. No clue how the receiver looks like or how big it is. Is it a box you put on the roof or a Smartphone?

It is relatively small. The antenna for satellite TV is bigger.

Oof, that’s the exact same I got from Google Fiber when they teased coming into this area…

…then they stopped running a quarter mile from my house… :sob:

We had the same dilemma with our kids and ended up running cat 6 through the crawlspace. I got an electrician to do it because I’m claustrophobic, don’t like crawling on my belly under the house.
We’ve very happy with it. I thought about the powerline route, but with all the games…er schoolwork they do, it just didn’t seem to be optimal.

So back when this post was a thing, I decided to dump all my old powerline extender and router gear and bought a NETGEAR AC1900 Nighthawk WiFi extender.

Ever since I dumped my powerline extender, my garage door openers are working great again! @Aginor was right … powerline extenders basically create a radio interference antenna out of your whole house’s electrical system LOL! My garage door openers would require you to be real close and press them multiple times. Screw that first world problem!

Dealing with the Nighthawk is still like trying to deal with the usual WiFi paranormal BS and I wouldn’t recommend it, but I’m learning to manage it. The addition of the 5GHz channel is a welcome speed boost (like double). I’m running it in basic mode …

IMO, Cat 6 is the only way to go for truly dependable internet service if you want to save some $.

They talk about $5 being enough for a 15ft cable. I can get premade patch cat6 cables from a local cable distributor and 15ft is $5.75CAD each, haha. They even provide a test certificate for the cable.
