20 years of the ArmA series this month

That’s awesome, I can hear it too!

I purchased Operation Flashpoint in 2001 from a Hastings bookstore (remember those?!). It was one of the last games that came in the old huge box, before they all went to the smaller box, which was how I got Resistance a year or so later. What an awesome game, and an amazing 20 year ride. Bohemia has had its ups and downs, but the series is an unparalleled infantry simulator, with great combined arms and even aircraft gameplay. I owe probably thousands of hours of fun over the years to BIS!

An inside joke for all of those who played a lot with the mission editor:
R.I.P. Bobby Bruning.

This is the telling point for me:
Game 1: 2001
Game 2: 2006
Game 3: 2009
Game 4: 2013
Game 5: 8 years and counting!!

Never took them more than 5 or less than 3 to make previous iterations, but let’s face it, Arma 3 is long in the tooth compared to what modern PCs can now present.

Even if they surprise release Arma 4 this year (not holding my breath) that’s a LOOOONG wait.

Ha! I found the picture my wife taken that day!

Me and my boy flying the Cobra! Pic was taken back in 2012, so he was actually 3.

My brain added an “of” there, which made it very confusing and made me feel old. I was sitting here wondering how old your wife is now, but also that it’s awesome that your father-in-law introduced her to Operation Flashpoint.

Then I read the second part, re-read the first part and went “Oh!” :joy:

He was a good solider.

ETA- I think I recall James Pound and Jim Self as well. It’s so funny, the names were always the same, and you could only have up to 12 in your squad so you got pretty familiar with them after a while.

Does anyone remember Jonny Patterson ?

Cold War Rearmed III is all I ever wanted.

Something looked funny in that pic, and I had to study it before I realized that was an M16A1E1. I was about to say the modder didn’t do his research when they designed the rear sight, but it turns out they did good research!

The real A2 didn’t really make its way into most Army units until after 1990. IRL Operation Flashpoint would have undoubtedly been fought with A1’s with broken triangle handguards (left ones, there were only right side replacements in inventory stocks, for some reason!); No way a unit on exercise in a backwater country like Everon would have gotten A2’s the same year it was adopted!

Lots of A1’s got the round handguard as soon as they came out. They couldn’t get those fragile triangle handguards replaced fast enough. I like them though, they feel great.

The triangular handguard is aesthetically and ergonomically superior in my opinion, buuuuut yeah durability is an issue in combat.

Really the only thing that broke were the little fingers at the top that protect the gas tube. Then after a couple in a row broke, you’d BBQ your thumb if it slipped into the gap.

Actually, didn’t the last of the A1E1s either get retired or re-labled as A2s around '83?

I don’t think the A2 existed until 85 at the earliest. USMC maybe, I don’t know. I think they were the driving force behind it, but big Army didn’t get them until much later.

I don’t know anyone that ever saw an A1E1 in the flesh though. Many/Most/All lowers eventually got the A2 stuff and got restamped. Who knows where the uppers went, probably DMRO.

Anyone got any tips for trying to teach a kid who has only ever played with an x box controller how to use K & M? God its hard work

The only solution is to let the boy play a Build engine game on a controller. He will see the error of his ways.

But, really, I’d actually let him try some of the vehicles. Those seem to be peachy on controller. Hook him up with a mission like SOG’s Ash and Trash.

I couldn’t figure out for the life of me how to swap the y-axis to inverted, hence the mouse and keyboard

Man oh Man I want to thank the ColdWarRearmed Team, and if you haven’t subscribed to this mod… highly recommended.

Every mission so well done, so many memories over the many years being replayed, revisited. AND all free! Look at the mission list compared to the 2 “pay” modules. Great Job! (Not that the Vietnam mod ain’t good, it’s great, but mostly for MP, only 3 SP missions included, I think it should of had more. jmo)

Don’t forget in the campaign screen, hit Shift and the Keypad minus key then type without quotes “campaign” and that will unlock every campaign mission… 30+ more to play… they really went all out with this mod.

That’s amazing! I will have to check this out, thank you!

Now I just wish that someone would put similar effort into de-bugging the Arma 2 Red Harvest Campaign. I remember it being awesome and very open-world free choice, but riddled with mission-killing bugs that stopped me in my tracks when I tried to play it. I never did complete it, but always wanted to.
