So I got visited and there’s a nasty inflammation that’s taking hold of my ear and spreading in the throat larynx.

Reminds me of last year when I thought I just was a bit hoarse because of having a cold and continued going to work, taking part in discussions with my croaking voice.
…until one day I lost the ability to speak and went to the doctor, who had to fight the urge to slap me for being an idiot. Turned out that I had an inflammation that had to be treated, or risk severe effects.
I was ordered not to speak. For two weeks.
When my wife learned of it she nearly fell off her chair laughing.
…until I installed the speech synthesis app on my phone and talked like Stephen Hawking for two weeks.

Like @chipwich I had a similar experience. My father worked as a machinist for years and when he would come home all he wanted was QUIET TIME. Thought he was just being a jerk until I started working in a machine shop. Within a month I already felt the same way.
