I haven’t tried these yet (will later today), but Reflected’s logic is sound.
I’m going to add number 5, reducing roughmet texture sizes:
Powershell script on ED Forums
I used to have horrible stutters when approaching parked aircraft or AI because of the texture loading, and those textures being something like 4k which is totally unneccessary. Reducing the roughmets to a more reasonable size completely eliminated those stutters for me.
I’ve been a bit MIA but hoping to get back in and definitely interested in these ideas. I think I’ve given up on my Quest Reverb G2 and instead going with 34" Ultrawide with head tracking (and plans for future more to triples).
Along similar lines for performance boosting on the opposite spectrum, I’m trying to optimize an old i7-6700K, 32GB and GTX980 to be used for my nephew to start with DCS. I’ve just started testing that rig.
Edit - my rig for reference is a R7-5800X, 64GB DDR4 3600, and RTX-4070 Ti Super OC w/16GB VRAM currently after splurging for the new VC earlier this year upgrading from the 3070 Ti FE
The main problem you’re going to find is that DCS is now very hungry for video card memory (VRAM if you prefer). The 980 is going to be the biggest bottleneck in that setup.
Options are something like an AMD Radeon RX 580 with 8GB of VRAM… these are pretty cheap nowadays particularly if you can find some old stock sitting on a shelf somewhere that the store is trying to get rid of, and should be enough for a 1080p display with moderate visual settings (textures medium is the big one, then terrain textures low if you’re still getting stuttering)
Yeah, I realize it’s the weak link… still an amazing card just not enough VRAM. I will say I was SHOCKED at how well it ran the TF-51 on Caucasus at Medium Presets though… pretty solid 100FPS. I realize the newer modules and scenery are what will bring it to it’s knees though. For now, I think if we can just get him in learning his Grandpa’s ol’ bird will be good enough for now. I’ll definitely be looking for GPU options but it’s nice to see that DCS can now utilize the CPU and RAM from this old server setup. It’s been collecting dust while I try to figure out how to repurpose it.
OK, it sounds like it will be fine then!
The 980 was a great card
Edit: the whole 900 series was great, in retrospect
Yeah… the 4GB of VRAM really hamstrings it… if I could just solder on another 4GB…
Biggest thing is trying to keep the costs of the rig as close to say an XBOX Series X as I can for the kid… and even that is going to be enough for the young lads’ eyes to saucer.
