40 years ago yesterday Air Canada Flight 143 ran out of fuel mid-flight

Was reminded of this yesterday.

Best quote from the article I wanted to share even if you already know the story

A crew of engineers from Winnipeg airport clambered into a van and headed for Gimli to assess the damage. During transit, however, their vehicle unexpectedly ran out of fuel, nearly ripping a hole in the delicate space-irony continuum.

A truly remarkable story that spellbound young Troll and further fueled my dreams of flying.
I actually own a piece of the Gimli Glider

Every time I spawn in with a 737 and an Air Canada livery and then stare at the simbrief fuel loading profile wondering why the numbers don’t work, I think of the Gimli Glider. :fuelpump:

There was also Transat Flight 236 that glided to Tenerife but due to a fuel leak I think? Canadian pilots seem to share gliding experience. I should give it a go!

A more technically accurate article as the one in the OP is a bit flowery :sunflower:

And “The Gottröra miracle” when both engines on a Scandinavian Airlines MD-81 stopped due to ingestion of clear ice. They didn’t make it to a runway, but everybody survived…

I love the fact that the captain had to use airmanship learned earning his PPL in slipping the aircraft in place of flaps. Great story fearless :+1:

I remember this happening but never heard the details. Great story fearless, this was in the comments. (not for the faint of heart)
