Not sure of this is a supercarrier module or VAICOM question. Probably a good one for @Chaz. In the canned supercarrier Case I recovery mission, when I enter the Ted Roosevelt ATC freq and transmit the VAICOM command “inbound”, the reply from the carrier is always to contact alternate. However, if I use the coms menu to do the same thing, it works as it should, including using VAICOM commands for the remainder of the approach.
Hmmm, I’ve had this happen too, and recall reading, somewhere, about the cause. I’ll try to look it up but, off the top of my head: it’s a VAICOM Pro thing, I think. It builds a dB of possible landing sites and gets confused. Gosh, I’ll stop now till I dig further.
Here’s were I read it, found it again:
VAIACOM Pro Manual, page 76-ish, footnote:
*) Supporting vessels may be on the same frequency as the actual carrier: always use Select e.g. ‘Washington,… Select’. Before entering the dialog to avoid ‘go to alternate’ responses from other battle group units. For approach, do not use the generic ATC ‘Inbound’ command but ‘Inbound for Carrier’ or ‘Marking Moms’ as listed.
That manual is dense with info and tuff to digest.
Yep known prior issue/conflict when the Supercarrier was released. But VAICOM added “Inbound for Carrier”. So use Inbound for airports and Inbound for Carrier when landing on the boat. It’s still not 100% and you may need to click the menu for that initial call.
Figured it out. Using the command “inbound for carrier” was not enough and resulted in an error tone due to the USS Arleigh Burke being the nearest ATC. What did work is if I used the “select” command, as in “select Theodore Roosevelt”, then “inbound carrier”. I suppose that if, like in this mission, you have a number of agencies on the same frequency, 127.5, DCS assumes that you want to talk to the nearest. In that case you need to indicate your intended recipient with the “select” command.
Edit: After I made this post, I read the section in the VAICOM Pro manual about the select command. At the end of the section, I found this interesting statement. Possibly I could have just used the command string, “Theodore Roosevelt inbound”. Will try it and report back,
Instant Select option
If you have activated your PRO license you can make use of the additional Instant Select feature. When
this option is switched on, the Select command is no longer needed to switch recipients. Instead just
naming a recipient in your call e.g. ‘Anapa,…inbound’ switches to Anapa tower immediately. With easy
comms ON the radio is automatically tuned for the new recipient. This provides a fast (although
perhaps not entirely realistic) means of switching dialog between recipients without the need to
involve the Select command at all.
That would be handy. I’ve thought about it before, using “Abe” and, in this case, “Teddy”. Based on my previous additions it should work? Won’t be able to test til tomorrow.
