Are you a prompt?

How would you know? Well, at least you’re probably not a Boltzmann brain…

Does it matter?

How is a consciousness defined by ones and zeros any different from that provided by a sack of meat with (seemingly) random electrical impulses? As Descarte said “I think therefore I am”.

My biggest worry is that little Zrgon from planet Xvilmple forgets to save before shutting down the sim because the parental unit is shouting at them that it is way past their hibernation time.

His failure to save is what causes Deja vu. When he realizes that he has forgotten to save his most recent session he reverts to an earlier save and the prior play through is remembered in the RAM.

It’s like that exchange in the Matrix (I’m going to misremember it):

Neo: “I’ve eaten at that restaurant a hundred times and it’s not real. What does that mean?”

Trinity: “The matrix can’t tell you who you are”

Even on my first viewing of the film I thought “no, that’s vapid and misses the point - the interactions with other people are the real thing that’s going on”

Of course, in the Matrix all the people were either real or programs that were certainly having some sort of experience (so I’d be happy to classify them as people)…

Essentially it comes down to a version of the simulation hypothesis, which say if its possible to create

They are living in a dream world, Neo. But are we?
