ARMA 3 Prairie Fire DLC Initial Impressions

I have a question regarding Prarie Fire: the support menu for calling in airstrikes shows up as a small map held up in front of you on the screen, instead of taking you to the normal full screen map.

This is awesome because you keep your eyes up and maintain SA, plus use landmarks to locate targets.

However, on my PC this screen is tiny, and at 1920x1080 the text is really small, I find myself having a hard time reading the different options. The other day I called in Napalm instead of 2x Mk82s (Ooops! :flushed:). Does anyone else have this problem, or know how to change the size of this map?

Are you sure the boys firing the ordnance didn’t just overrule you because napalm is the answer to everything?

Napalm is the answer to almost everything- except when you need a danger close surgical strike to take out a machine gunner.

It did the job, but took out a half squad of too-eager ARVN at the same time. :expressionless:

ETA:

I really do wish the PF Radio Support module included artillery as well as CAS. Currently I’m only seeing options for airborne CAS, but the set up is so much better and easier to use than going into the fullscreen map and using the clunky command menu to radio fire support the old way. Right now if I want to put a couple Arty batteries and a mortar or two at the player’s disposal, I have to use the old Support Requester module. It’d be super cool to have it all using the PF method.

I also just discovered you can change the direction of the strike by holding shift and dragging the mouse. This is really awesome for Napalm, or even if a Mk82 goes long (or short), it won’t impact your troops. Neat!

I don’t feel much like writing. It’s overwhelming. There is so much to say about the experience of trekking through the lush jungle with other players that it would take me all day to write it. But I will share a funny experience. People sometimes ask regarding my profession, “Doesn’t the pressure and responsibility of flying all those people get to you?” Of course every pilot knows that the airplane itself is responsibility enough. Other than issues of comfort, you don’t think much about the people. But yesterday I was left with the short straw and had to shuttle a team between two LZs for a long and hairy Prairie Fire mission (I forget which chapter but it involves a road and some trucks—as the pilot, I was quite fuzzy on the details). I experienced a nervousness and crushing responsibility I’ve never felt in my profession. In my hands was the ability to wreck this 30 minutes into which these 12 players have invested their time. For the entire length of this long mission my mind raced. How do I communicate the damage this Huey is taking to the rest of the team? Why can’t they hear me? Why in the hell is it so hard for me to approach this bloody pad?! Why am I embarrassed? Why am I laughing?Ultimately I struck a pole while trying to land in a small village and I killed us all. The leader of the mission was kind and patient and suggested that I fly in 3rd person next time. But my playtime was over. I had to leave now or miss my helicopter lesson :flushed:. These are the best of times, friends, the best of times!

How does one become a member of the Pilot class in Mike Force? I can unlock helicopters but I am unable to fly them. The duty officer will chance me to some classes, like demolition or medic, but not pilot.

Do you have to be a Green Hornet first?

If you go to the duty officer, and bring up the support task menu (or whatever it’s called, I think H is the key), there should be a patch at the top. If you click on that I think you can select a different unit, try selecting Green Hornets. I’m on a trip or I would try it myself to see, I haven’t had the confidence (and suicidal/homicidal tendencies) to fly a load of troops into a hot LZ since I started playing Arma 3 again. I was never very good, but I’m afraid now it would be equivalent to getting into one of those suicide booths in Futurama.

I think Mike Force must have a maximum ratio of infantry to pilots. I went back into the server later and it let my fly all three types.

I believe there are ranked and unranked servers for Mike Force. On a ranked server only the Loach might be an option first.

I’ve been trying to set off satchel charges, but they don’t come up in the scroll wheel menu. I’ve added them in the editor, but when I look in my loadout in-mission, they aren’t there. I looked at the forum for bug reporting, etc, but nobody seemed to mention anything.

Could somebody try to add 'satchel ‘charge’ to their loadout and see if they see it in their inventory in the mission editor? Does it show up? Can you set it off?

Edit: NM, I guess. Last week we were playing a user made mission and the satchels didn’t come up in the scroll wheel. Today I loaded up the editor and placed a unit with a satchel and it didn’t show up. I then placed another unit and it showed up and then I loaded up the user made mission from last week and it worked. So, either the problem is intermittent or I’m smoking something.

So, I just discovered that I’m a big dummy, and you CAN call artillery fire using the PF module! And IT. IS. AWESOME!!

When you bring up the PF support menu, there is a PRC-15 (or maybe it’s a PRC-E7, I seem to remember we had those somewhere… ).
On that radio, which I thought was for cosmetic purposes, there are selector dials. One of which, if clicked (and which is obvious if you actually read the labels, although in my defense mine are pretty hard to read) will select between air support and artillery. When calling an arty barrage, you can click and drag on the map and call fire missions which send rounds across the line you’ve drawn. It’s AMAZING! Well done PF, sorry I’m such an idiot and missed it.

If artillery isn’t available in your mission, you can add it (and customize which kind of support is available, as well as how much) by following the directions in the Wiki:
https://wiki.sogpf.com/index.php/Radio_Support

You have to have a description.ext file in the mission’s folder that defines the support options. There is a default one which will give you arty fire. I bet that many other PF players are unaware of this due to the lack of documentation. (Or maybe I hope it’s not just me :joy:)

Paste this into your description.ext file:

class vn_artillery_settings

// Add your NUMBER variable that will be used as a cost variable - leave empty if you don’t want the cost to matter.

// Make the first true for the radio to be always avaliable

Sorry, you don’t need to paste anything in your description.ext. The radio support will work with just the module placed and the radio on you. The description.ext is if you want to alter the available support option. E.g. give your players more or less options. I’ve added new categories for testing Unsung Redux planes with it, works fine.

Here are some more screens from co-op MP. Some quite intense firefights, especially if you turn down AI accuracy (as mentioned here, but I forget by whom) We’ve been groundpounding and haven’t gotten to any helo ops yet.

Thanks for posting this. I was also being a dummy and using the default supports module. I didn’t even know there was PF one. And… YES it is awesome!! Just played around with the Arty and Air support some but will try to config resupply and transport later. Very cool stuff indeed. Can’t wait to make some missions with this.

If you figure out how the transport and resupply support works let me know, I haven’t figured it out and the documentation is missing; it may not be implemented yet.

Hopefully they get time to catch up on the documentation soon. I played Mike Force last night with a small group and got great performance the entire time and had a blast.

Did a boat mission tonight. We circled around Paradise Island, softening up the shore emplacements and finally worked our way inland to clear two NVA encampments and destroy the NV boats operating out of there.

F’in A boys! Lots of guys enjoying the heck out of this mod!

I ran across this while unraveling the mysteries of the Robinson R-22. This is the story of MACV from the helicopter pilot’s perspective.
