Big news for IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of... series today.

or just Il2

How about “Mother of all Battles”?

I never was a big fan of using the “IL-2 Sturmovik” brand on everything. I understand why they do it but it’s just so hard to explain to the uninitiated.

I’m kind of torn about the tone in some of their annoucments. They tend to point out they’re best in class on many fields. Maybe that’s just what professional marketing does but it may be received as a little snobbish. Other developers don’t do these comparisions.

well compared to war thunder they kick major ass. compared to dcs… just different. i reckon flying beings out the big alpha male egos in people.

Story of flight sims over the past 10 years, every year, PTO next year we swear

Yay for RoF 2.

Yay for other planes I like in BoOB (battle of operation bodenplatte, BoB is kinda already taken)

grumble grumble, where’s my wallet again?

Oh thank goodness. I was afraid I was going to have to start paying attention to another sim. ETO, WWI and WW2 Tonks?

Call me when someone figures out a coherent vision for a PTO product.

LOL!
But if they announced a Hornet…

Hm… Like others, I never thought keeping the IL-2 brand name was such a great idea. But I care less what they call it and more about the content.

I suggest GB, for Great Battles.

Prop heads touching my 4th Gen?

BoSBoMBoK Dev: “Wait, hear me out. What if we stopped working on a theater that would fulfill a totally untouched niche for modern combat flight simulation and just re-did the exact same locations and planes as everyone else that has a crack at WW2 in the air?”

BoSBoMBoK Manager: “Genius, ship it!”

Well, you know…

Wow, lots of news. Feelings:

  • Yay, ROF 2 (-ish) in VR. The world needs this.

  • Yay, late WWII European using the IL-2 ‘pack’ of aircraft packaging. An aircraft set, a map and time period all tied together - nice.

  • Ok. Tanks I guess, in that I never really played them much in BoX but more is generally better.

  • Oh. Pacific Theater is going to be down the road. That’s a shame.

The truly big thing underneath about this announcement is 1C/777 throwing their hat in the ring of getting outside 3rd parties to develop content. That will either be a force multiplier in terms of what’s possible to get done in parallel or it won’t

I think the PTO vs ETO is an interesting decision, in that a lot of us are probably underestimating what it would take to get from zero aircraft for the setting (heh) vs a full plane set. Also, with 1C it is never worth forgetting that the Russian/Eastern player market is pretty important, and Midway ain’t gonna get people excited there. Doing it this way around (with 3rd parties starting up as well) is probably sensible.

I’m pretty happy with this news. Yes, a PTO would be nice, but the ETO is always going to be my primary area of interest (probably because I am ex-RAF). Really looking forward to flying the Tempest!

And Flying Circus? YES!!! This is going to be so awesome in VR. I loved RoF but haven’t touched it since getting the Rift.

This is my situation as well…

So FC…HEY…! We have used that for another WWI sim. Who remembers Flying Corps? My first 3D accelerated sim. I consider Flamin Cliffs to sort under DCS these days, so we can safely use FC for Flying Circus.

Aaaanyways… When I heard about Oculus Rift, I thought “this is going to rock in RoF!”
I really welcome todays announcement… In case that somehow was unclear to anyone.

I am cautiously optimistic about this. This is good news from a flight sim perspective … given that adds some competition to the existing products and services and I think that is a good thing. It grows the community. I am going to wait to see how it pans out.

Putting on moderator pants for a moment: I want to caution us against being critical of something that we might not be interested in to start with. 1C/777 is taking a chance to grow their product in a direction that they feel, after sober consideration, is the right direction. I can’t and won’t fault them for that and I don’t want us to take away from those in our community who are looking forward to this. We can all be critical but I would like us to wait until the product is out before we do our high school papers to ‘compare and contrast’ these two novels.

I am likely being overly sensitive, or expecting us to start arguing and getting our opinions all over ourselves, and for that I would apologise.

To be honest, I am really confused by this decision. Bodenplatte?

CLoD is BOB, and Team Fusion is on their way to Mediterranean.
From BOS/BOM/BOK they have SpitV, 190, 109, 110, P40, P39. So in case of ETO I would expect post-BOB ETO with Chanel map.

I am indifferent on the PTO, but why Bodenplatte? However in case competition is the moving force behind the increasing quality then lets see what it will brings.

On the other hand Flying Circus sounds really good.

At least you WW2 buffs got something. I’m still waiting for MiG Alley 2!

This makes tons of sense to me, for those who claim it does not.

Look what they have now–Russian and German birds.
Look at this list for the next title:

  • Bf-109 G-14

  • Bf-109 K-4

  • Fw-190 A-8

  • Me-262

  • P-51D

  • P-47D

  • Spitfire Mk. IX

  • Tempest Mk. V

  • Fw-190 D-9 (Collector)

  • P-38L (Collector)

  • B-25 (AI)

What does it show? A list of German planes that they already have other models of, so mostly conversion from existing planes (which means cheaper to do), and a list of Allied planes that also fought in the PTO and can be used again.
We also see jets, which are popular. Sales point.

Once BoBo is done (I’m going to ™ that term), they will have the non-naval Allied planes they’ll need for the PTO.

TBH, this order makes 100x more sense than making PTO first and then Western Front. Maybe some customers would prefer that order instead, but for a company w/limited resources, I agree with Jason here. This makes sense. Sorry, but in his position I would’ve done the same thing.

Personally, I want the old-style coop and RoF-style career/campaigns to be pushed up in priority before any new planes/theaters are released so I can enjoy what I already have more, but I admit that will not drive sales nearly as much and I’m willing to be patient awhile longer.

This stuff is gonna be out in the wild in like a month or so. Don’t you worry your pretty little head bud :stuck_out_tongue:

While I would have liked to do carrier stuff, I would be “done” with midway in a matter of months. Flying over my own country and perhaps even city in iconic crates like the spit, the mustang, thunderbolts and lightning… whoa.

oh… oh and then theres the flying circus stuff and that has me giddy as a little girl at the very thought of doing a Fokker Dr.1 in VR.

and tonight im dreaming of taking an Il2M into battle against the germans in bodenplatte, or trying how long a sopwith camel survives vs a Me-262 in the instant mission thinger

Hey, awesome news. I was just going over ‘Air Power for Patton’s Army: The XIX Tactical Air Command in the Second World War’ a couple weeks ago. It is a good read and chapter 5 covers the time and place (I assume) that will be included.

If they choose to go the historical route, it should be a lot like the Normandy campaigns I have been working on with a lot of interdiction behind the lines. The Luftwaffe was not much of a factor but when they showed up, they tended to do so in force. Then of course, Bodenplatte itself should be neat to see play out.

Divebombing IJN flattops in a Dauntlas and Wildcat v Zero dogfights on squad nights will be sorely missed. That is until I get my Jug on. Can’t wait to get a high fidelity version of that aircraft.
