1070ti… So far seems to be giving about 20 FPS increase on most maps in vr… except Normandy which gives about 35 increase … May be a bit CPU bound with the i5 7600k … hopefully to be changed in the next couple of months
Nice work!!
Very nice mate! congratulations!

EDIT - Realized the following isn’t too helpful without a before picture.
Old - i7 6700 4.4Ghz, 32 GB RAM 2100Mhz, nVidia 1080 (non-ti) w/8GB VRam, SSD drive
New - AMD 5900X up to 4.8Ghz, 64 GB RAM 3200, nVidial 3080Ti w/12 GB VRAM, SSD drive (M.2 for user files)
Congrat’s - Had my 3080Ti-based rig now for couple of weeks. Given only a bump in the vis range and a slight bump in pixel density - it’s running better[*]. I did turn on motion vector (I think it’s called?) to smooth out that last little bit of ‘stutter’; the one you see out the side and when really rolling hard.
Yeah, 64GB RAM just made sense (I got a good price for it at the time); “They” said 32 was too much back in the day (circa 2015). But I disagree. Sucker [DCS] loads fast.
[*] I’m in VR: I rank my experience priorities as: readability/clarity followed really close behind by smoothness. The smoothness seems to up the immers…I’m tired of that word …“mesmeric” qualities (I found a new word today )
I’d say I have it tuned as far as I want to go and I’m getting ~75% +/- improvement in graphics performance in DCS. Haven’t re-installed FS2020.
Real world metrics: Before I’d only see 90 (no motion vector stuff) up high, looking up. Sometimes. Now it’ll hold 90 even down low a lot of the time, and almost never below 45. This is all without a lot of AI - the “Combat” part of DCS". Just FWIW.
Note I have some extra stuff running lua: VoiceAttack/VAICOM Pro; SimShaker+; and my own code (that only seems to use ~0.5% of processing resources, or less). All told, they drop it about 3% but I can’t live without them.
Keeps my man-closet toasty too! Seems temperature is going to be an even bigger deal in our future.
Thanks. I suspect my dcs will mostly be in the weeds. Last year was Huey. This year may well turn out as Apache if it is as addictive.
@ [jross], I would like to hear what you think of the 64gb of Ram with DCS or anyone else here who recently upgraded or whatnot…
I am not doing an upgrade just did two in the last two years so that is out… I am trying to get a GPU but with the way it is going the first 6-8 months this year will be climbing out of the hole I dug LOL!!
I went from 32GB to 64GB about 10 months ago but since I also switched the CPU and Mainboard in the process it’s really hard to tell what difference it made.
What I will say is that DCS will happily use 45GB in large multiplayer missions.
Not much to report yet. Likely a no news is good news thing? I did notice that 21 GB was being used on a mission in DCS but I don’t recall what tool I was using to see that value. And the mission wasn’t all that “full” of stuff. In fact I don’t think there was much at all. I’ll see what I can here in a little bit on this…
The PC is built and in testing. The only reported glitch was fitting the cpu cooler to a 12 gen cpu. It needed a bracket. They are sending me photos of it which i will post, prior to it being dispatched to me.
Has anyone used power main links to get an Ethernet cable in range of where you want your pc to go? Any comments on this would be apprciated.
Powerline sort of depends on how new your house wiring is, as it degrades if it has to cross boards. Most UK houses have the fuses in the plugs themselves more (which is why the plugs are basically the Godzilla size they are) so it might not be a problem. If it’s an old house with old wiring, not a good chance of success.
If you really can’t get a CAT6 cable through walls/floors, then the next down is the newer Wifi 6 routers - they work pretty well but come at a bit of a cost. The next down would be a Wifi 5 mesh, as you can put a few devices around the house, although a bit overkill for one PC. Some previous talk about the options here:
Upgraded my rig over the holidays:
i7-12700k (OC’d to 5.3ghz)
MSI Z-490 DDR4
EVGA 3080ti
32gb (4x8) DDR4 3600
OS and DCS on separate M.2 drives
Reverb G2
Installed Win11 vice Win10.
Bought the DDR4 motherboard to use my 32gb of DDR4 from the old system. I didn’t want to wait or pay scalper prices for DDR5. I might upgrade to 64gb (32x2), though I’m not sure how much of a difference that will make.
Il-2 runs outstanding in VR. Haven’t really experimented too much with MSFS yet. I’m having a tough time optimizing DCS. It was working well on my old system and feels slightly worse on the new. I’m working my way through the Thud’s VR4DCS guide, trying different combinations of settings. I think the worst thing with DCS is that unless I enable MSAAx2, I get horrible shimmering.
@Scoop, or anyone with CoaX in house and no ethernet you should use a “MoCA” setup try that. it is Multimedia over CoAx. it is the next best thing to ethernet…
So should have pics and a video of the new pc on Monday. ETA Tuesday. But what about the gorgeous Felicity you ask, who has permitted this extravagant purchase. Her laptop has died. I offered her the use of mine but then spotted a good deal from the makers of my pc. Fliss will get a new HP laptop with the same delivery of my pc. A few hundred to my pc’s few thousand. I know how to pamper a lady!
I experimented today in DCS, turning MSAA off but bumping SteamVR SS up to 100%. PD of 1.0. All motion reprojection off. A tiny bit of shimmer is still there, but better. And it feels better than what I was able to achieve with MSAA on. I suppose I need to turn on some sort of FPS display and get real quantitative measurements…
Well its built. Hopefully will arrive tomorrow.

Is that Noctua put in sideways? I never thought of that, but I guess it could draw heat from the backplate of the 3080 Ti and then push it through the roof of the case?
@Scoop it all looks good, I’m just curious if others set up their CPU coolers in that orientation or not?
