OMG, what a cluster … with all these layers of software to get XR to work right.

How on earth did a company that markets directly to the customer get inserted as an integral element of the process (Steam)? We already have that with MS to some degree but one company dominating delivery of content seems a bit rude for the content providers.

Thanks to all for warning me of the definitely not plug and play rabbit hole that is VR.

Ok
I’m heading down the hole. Have machine, monitor and DCS loaded. In the process of installing modules and getting the HOTAS config utilities up and running.

ITS ALL YOUR FAULT folks

Crashed in VR for the first time last night… Never put an L-39 in the dirt before but that was pretty real indeed. I had to rip the headset off before hitting and that was in MSFS.

VR adds sooooo much (as many here have pointed out). I can not wait to get it going in DCS with the infinitely better graphics and actually true to airframe performance. I’m just going too have to watch a lot more HOTAS set up videos first. I’m even failing at JoyPro :frowning:

The rush of adrenaline when you are about to crash in VR is really astonishing.
I try to hit pause or close my eyes before it happens.

Maybe a little weird that I still recall the following incident :

It’ just a game-within-a-game thing for me: to never hit the virtual turf with anything but the main gear, at the proper place/time. Perhaps why the above startled me.

I have tried getting on top of that three times now, never managed to wrap my mind around it. Good news; it isn’t necessary.

I finally gave up and found a button number listing for all three of my input devices then have been manually building functionality as I go. I see why DCS gets a bad rap for putting users through this after just plugging the stuff in and going flying in MSFS. It just worked there while, in DCS, things like getting the three flap positions to work on the L-39 is a mystery. Kinda nuts but I was warned (thank you).

I’m looking forward to getting enough 2D time in DCS to try VR.

My first controls mapping for any new aircraft in DCS pretty much goes as follows:

Map axis controls to HOTAS (pitch, roll, rudder, throttles, zoom view, toe brakes if applicable) and set 10 curvature as a starting setting to pitch, roll and rudder.

Map pitch trim to joystick hat at a minimum, map wheel brake pinky trigger if applicable. Map flaps and air brake if applicable.

That’s it, then I go fly - I’ll use the keyboard and mouse to click in the cockpit for anything not covered above.

This way I get a feel for the plane, can change configurations and zoom view in the cockpit as I go. Only takes me a couple of minutes to set up the above binds.

Once I know more about the plane, I’ll start setting specific controls - reset force trim for helos, armament controls etc.
